PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES L. ALDRED', OF PULASKI, ILLINOIS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Yatent No. 526,122,da.ted September 18,1894.
' Application filedMey 8, 1894- Serial No. 610,606. (No model.) I
Be it known that 1, JAMES L. ALDRED, a citi zen of the United States, residing at'Pulaski, in the county of Pulaski and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in adjustable moldboards for plows, and it has for. its object the production of an arrangement wherein the adjustment of the moldboard may be effected with greater case than in prior devices, and one wherein the device employed Will be more effective and simple than any heretofore known. These ends I attain by certain peculiar features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, that will be more fully described hereinafter and finally embodied in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my complete arrangement showing it applied to a plow; Fig. 2, a bottom plan, showing the arrangement of the operating lever; Fig. 3, a detail perspective of the lever detached from the remaining parts; Fig. 4, a longitudinal section 7 taken through the lever.
The reference numeral 1 indicates the landside of the plow, and 2 the plowshare, which latter has the segmental opening 3 formed in its upper end. In this opening 3 the moldboard 1 is arranged, and the moldboard has a corresponding projection on its lower side, which is adapted to fit in the opening 3, afore: said, so that the moldboard will have free movement on the axial point 5, and limited by the shoulder 6 on the moldboard and engaging the point 7 on the plowshare.
Formed integral with the upper end of the plowshare and forming a part thereof is the frame 8,which extends upwardly for a slight distance and is formed of open-work, as may be seen in Fig. 2. In this frame 8, the pin 5 is passed, and the pin 5 is the pivotal point of the moldboard 4, as explained. v
Formed in the upper side of the frame 8 is the segmental or (1 uadrant shaped recess 9, in which recess the lever 10 is fulcrumed at its lower end. From the recess 9 the lever 10 extends upwardly and rearwardly to a point near the upper end of the moldboard, and the lever has pivotally connected thereto the link 11, which extends outwardly and to the right and is pivotally connected to the moldboard at its outer end. By these means the lever and the moldboard are connected to each other and by swinging the lever on its fulcrum the moldboard may be similarly moved on its pivotal point 5.
Formed on the upper end of the framework 8 is the curved bar 12, which is provided with the ratchet teeth 13, and adapted to co-0per ate with the spring actuated pawl 14 of the lever 10. The pawl 14 is operated by the bell-crank and rod 15, and is of the class usually employed-in such connections.
Through my invention the angle of the moldboard may be variously adjusted, and by means of the pawl and ratchet mechanism just described, this position may be retained. Since the purpose of changing the angle of the moldboard is well known to all persons skilled in the art, it will not be necessary for me to explain it in detail. It will suffice for me to say that by so changing the board the furrow slice will be deposited in a correspondingly changed position.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The combination of a plowshare having at its upper end an indentation bounded at its lower end by a segmental shoulder, a moldboard pivoted in the indentation and having a projection matching with the segmental wall aforesaid, a lever fulcrumed to the plowshare, a link connected to the mold-board and to the lever, a hand operated pawl on the lever, and a ratchet on the plowshare with which ratchet the pawl co-operates, whereby the moldboard may be adjusted to various positions, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES L. ALDRED.
