Be it known that I, FRANK D. MARTIN, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Spring field, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scholars Companions, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the class of scholars companions, and particularly to abracket covering the end edges, and to the end itself.

The object of the invention is to provide a skeletonbracket of simple, cheap and durable construction, in which the lid of the scholars companion is pivoted, and by means of which the end piece is secured to the companion.

A further object of the invention is to provide an end piece of the same outline as the skeleton bracket so that itmay be held socurely in place by simply attaching the said bracket in its proper position.

The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, and essentially in the peculiar manner of making the end piece and the bracket.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a scholars companion, open, showing my improved end brackets in place. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the brackets. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the end pieces. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a modified form of the bracket. Fig. 5 is an end view of the lid. Fig. 6 is a sectional view partly broken away.

The same letters of reference denote the same parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.

The top or lid A, has pivots B, formed 1n the same piece therewith, with the end of each pivot flush with the ends of the lid, leav ing a space a.

The skeleton bracket C, which is cast all in one piece has top flanges b, and 0, bottom flanges D and E, and side flanges d, and 6.

At each lower corner of the bracket the flanges E, and e, are extended at right angles to form ears F, having an aperture f. The said flanges e, have ears G, with an aperture g, the said ears being formed by extending the flanges e, at right angles near them top. At the juncture of one of the end flanges and the top flange is formed, in the same piece with the bracket, the bearing H, for the said pivot B, and a central opening is left through the bracket smaller than the box end.

The ends I, are of shape to fit in upon the flanges D, c, and d, 01, their lower corners being square, while one of their upper corners is convexed or'rounded at h, and the other upper corner concaved or cut out at i, and when the said ends I, are placed in this position, they form the inclosing ends of the companion without the use of screws, brads, nails, or any such attaching elements either between the end piece and the bracket or between the companion and end piece.

The sides K, bottom L, and ends I, are connected or joined and held firmly together by the skeleton bracket, and when the form of bracket as shown in Fig. 3 is employed, the pin 1, extends through the ears F, and through the sides K, and into the bottom L, while through the aperture gin the earsG, andinto the said sides, is driven a like shorter pin l, thus completing the said connection, without employing screws, brads, or any other securing elements to produce a complete scholars companion.

Referring to the modification shown in Fig. 4, the flange E, is made deeper so that the bottom L, will rest thereon, and be held in place by the bracket allowing the shorter pin Z, to be used which only enters the side of K, Without engaging the bottom L, thus leaving the ends and bottom entirely separate from each other, and from the bracket and sides while the intermediate ear N, cast with the bracket, so as to extend through the end piece, is for the purpose of attaching a partition M in the companion, after the brackets are secured in place. By this construction and arrangement, the brackets containing the end pieces,with the lid pivotedin the same and the bottom in position, have simply to be attached to the sides, tocomplete a scholars companion of a very cheap and novel character.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The herein described end bracket for boxes, having flanges upon its top, bottom and sides, ears upon the said bottom and side flanges, and a central opening through the bracket, as set forth.

2. The herein described end bracket for boxes, having flanges upon its top, bottom and sides, and a central opening through it, ears projecting from one of the said bottom and side flanges, and the pivot bearing formed in the same piece with the bracket at the juncture of one of the top and side flanges,

as set forth.

3. The herein described end bracket for boxes having flanges covering all the end edges of the box, and a central opening, the flange covering the bottom edge being deeper than the other flanges, combined with the ears, and the pivot bearing formed in the same piece with the bracket at the juncture of two of the said flanges, as set forth.

4. The combination in a scholars companion, of the skeleton bracket having top and bottom flanges, and side flanges provided with ears, the end pieces shaped to fit in between all of the said flanges and the side ends of the companion, the said end pieces being held in place by securing the said side ends to the said ears, as set forth.

5. In a scholars companion, the lid having the pivots formed in the same piece therewith, the skeleton brackets having flanges upon their top, bottom and sides, the ears and pivot bearing formed in the same piece FRANK D. MARTIN.
