It is well known that in dipping such substances a large proportion of the matter dipped is inclined to adhere to the sides of the dipper, and that some object, such as the finger, a spoon, knife or some article must be used to clean the material from the inside of the dipper.

DIPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,382, dated September 4, 1894.
Application filed September 19 1892- Serial No. 446,353. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDSON CLEMANT BAUGH- MAN, residing at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee, State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Dipper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in dippers, and more especially to that class of dippers or ladles that are used for dipping thick, sticky or pasty substances. It is well known that in dipping such substances a large proportion of the matter dipped is inclined to adhere to the sides of the dipper, and that some object, such as the finger, a spoon, knife or some article must be used to clean the material from the inside of the dipper.
The object of my invention is to obviate this difficulty by making a dipper that will be self cleaning: that is, when emptied, scrape the material from the inside of the dipper.
To this end, my invention consists in a dipper having a set of scrapers, arranged within the dipper and fitting against the bottom and sides of the same,and means of actuating said scrapers. Its construction will hereinafter be fully described and specifically pointed out.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1. is a top View of the machine as it appears with the cutter in position for operation. Fig. 2. is a bottomview with spring handle and outside frame in position for operation. Fig. 3. is a side view of the outside frame and cutters.
The apparatus consists of a bowl, A., a handle, E., and outside frame, 0., and knives, B.
The knives B., cross each other at right angles at the bottom of the bowl, as shown in the inverted Fig. 3. Bowl A., passes over and on the outside of the knives, B., and is held in position by curved ends of knives, B.
The frame, 0. passes through and secures in place the bowl, A., without rivets or other fastenings. The ends, or tips of the knives, B., are secured to the frame 0., at the top.
One arm, G. of the coil spring E. is attached to the frame 0. at theend of the slot F. by means of a loop, H. The other arm, G. of the coil spring E., is attached to the bowl A, through the slot F., by means of the loop or 1 band H.
I The dipper is operated as follows: By a pressure upon the spring handle E., the bowl, A., is carried to the left one eighth of one full turn by spring handle E. The knives, B., are carried to the right, one eighth of one 00 full turn in bowl'A.,'by spring handle E., thus causing all the inside surface of bowl, A. to be passed over by cutters, B. Outside frame, 0. retains in position, cutters, B. and
is allowed to rotate on outside of bowl A., by means of slot F. and is held in position by loop H. on cup A. handle, D., gives additional surface to the springhandle, E., allowing the hand to firmly grasp the same and control the dipper. Spring handle E. is constructed with a coil spring at outer end, which causes the dipper to resume its receiving condition after the discharge of the contents, and its release by the hand. Slot F., allows loop H. on bowl, to 7 5 pass to loop H. on the outside frame. G. passes through loop H. where it is held by riveting, or otherfastening. and holds in position, arm G. allowing arm G. to move in a circular manner as a hinge. 8o
