TOBACCO-PIPE.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,302. dated January 30, 1866; .antedated January 18, 1866.

To all Iwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT LIVINGsToN, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful improvements in the construction and operation of pipes for smoking, as also cigar-holder, and I dov declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of my improvements, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, making part of this specifieation, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, in which drawings several modes of carrying out my improvements are shown.

ln the drawings like parts of the invention are indicated by the same letters of reference.

The nature of my invention consists in so constructing the stem, tube, or mouth-piece of smoking-pipes or cigar-holders that the orifice in the same at its opening shall be turned down so that the saliva (which in ordinary pipe-smoking passes directly from the mouth of the smoker into the main tube or stem, and thencei to the tobacco, dampening the same and clogging the main tube or stem) is eompelled to ascend this orifice before it ean enter the main stem or tube.

To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same.

Many ways of efecting the object of the present invention may be employed. In the drawings several ways are fully illustrated.

In Figure l an ordinary pipe-stem is shown adapted to effect the result. A shows the stem or tube, the central opening or orifice in which is closed by the insertion of a movable plug, B, thus preventing the saliva from passing from the mouth of the smoker into the stem A. This stem A is provided on its under side with an opening placed a short distance from its upper end, into which opening I insert a short supplemental or auxiliary tube, U, placed vertically or at a proper angle to 'the stem A, so that while the smoke passes freely through this auXi-liary tube O it is impossible for any saliva from the mouth of the smoker to enter'the stem A through the same.

In Fig. 2 my improvement is shown constructed in another manner and inserted in the end of an ordinary pipe-stem or nouthpiece.

In Fig. 3 the stem and auxiliary tube, properly shaped, are made in one Vand the same piece.

In Fig. et the improvement, forming a continuation of the stem and attached thereto, is shown.

In Fig. 5 the supplemental or auxiliary tube is inserted in the upper side of the main stem Aor tube and is curved sufficiently to effect the desired result.

In Figs. 5%- and 6 still further modifications of the invention areshown.

In. Fig. 7 (two views) a continuation of the stem, tube, or nouth-piece is shown, formed of two plates with a central opening through w'hicl the main tube or its connection passes.

Figs. S and 9 show still further modifications of the invention.

In Fig. 10 a modification of the invention applicable to the common clay-pipe is illustrated, the same consisting of a rubber tube made or provided with a supplemental tube passed or stretehed over the upper end of the pipe.

The difficulties in pipe-smoking which are intended to be overcome by the present invention are the passage of saliva from the mouth of the smoker down the main stem or tube to the tobacco contained in the bowl, d'ampeuing the tobacco and clogging up the main stem or tube. This, as already described, is effected by constructing the tube or stem in such a manner that the orifice in the same at its opening shall be turned down, so that the saliva cannot enter the main stem or tube, as it must first ascend the turned portion of the stem or tube.

The presence of the movable plug B in all other instances shown, save in Fig. 1, in which instance it is employed for the double purpose ot' closing the orifice and allowing the stem to be cleaned, enables the stem or tube in which it is inserted to be readily cleaned by removing this plug B and inserting any convenient device withinthe tube A through the opening closed by the plug when the pipe is in use.
