To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that L'DANIEL SEXTON, of Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in File-Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to file cases; and the object of my invention is to produce a portable file-case, which is simple and inexpensive of construction, and which will without outside assistance, hold any position of adjustment intermediate of an entirely opened or closed position.

With this object in view, my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the bottom of the file-case, and extending vertically upward from each end of said bottom are the similar end walls 2. An end wall 3 is vertically arranged and located a slight distanceinward of each end wall 2. The sides of the case 4, are hinged at 5 to the side margin of the bottom 1 these hinges consisting preferably of flfiiibla strips glued or otherwise secured to the bottom and to the sides. Extending inwardly and at right angles to the sides 4, and also secured thereto near each end are the similar end walls 6, the ad jacent end walls 6 of each side, forming together the end walls of the file-case when in their closed or vertical position. These bolts also project slightly through the inner parallel walls 3, between which walls and the walls 2 the lower portion of the end walls 6 are interposed, and the inner ends of said screw bolts 9 are engaged by fiat retaining nuts 10, which are adapted to lie flush with the inner side of the walls 3.

In order to prevent a roughened inner surface, and also prevent any likelihood of the papers within the file-case being torn by the projecting ends of the bolts, the inner side of the walls 3 may be covered by a-thinslip of paper or linen 11 as shown most clearlyin Fig. 4.. The top or cover 12 is hinged at 13 by a flexible strip to the upper longitudinal margin of one of the side walls 4, and this top or cover is of width equal to the width of the bottom 1, and isformed with a flange 14 depending atright angles to its outer margin which is adapted to fit over and against the outer side and upper margin of the companion side-wall 4.

In order to brace the device longitudinally, similarly depending flanges 15 are provided at each end of the cover 12,'and these flanges are adapted to fit snugly against the outer sides of the upper ends of the end walls 6 as shown more clearly in Fig. 1. In order to form a perfectly smooth case both inside and out, I glue or otherwise secure to the inner sides of the end walls 6 a paste-board strip 17; these paste-board strips 17 extending from the strip 7 downwardly for a suitable distance, so that their lower margins form shoulders 18 which fitor rest snugly upon the upper margins of the inner walls 3 when in closed position. I also glue or otherwise secure to the outer sides of the end walls6 a paste-board strip 16 which is recessed to form the horizontal shoulder 18 and the vertical shoulder 19; these shoulders being adapted to fit snugly upon and against the upper and end margins respectively, of the end walls 2.

From the above it will be seen that by tensioning the clamping nut 10 sufficiently, frictional resistance between the end walls 6 and walls 2 and 3 may be obtained sufficient to hold the sides at any inclinationdesired.

If desired, this case may be provided with a handle 38 hinged in any suitable manner to the top or cover 12, and in order to secure said top or cover in its closed position a hook 39 may be pivoted to the outer side of the flange 14, to engage a staple or loop 40 secured to the outer side of the wall 4 against which side flange rests when the cover is in its closed position. It is to be understood that this file case while preferably made of heavy paste board and having the end walls 6 of wood, may be made entirely of paste board or entirely of light wood if desired, or of any other suitable material.

In the modified form shown in Figs. 5, G and 7, a pair of walls 42-42 parallel to each other extend vertically upward from each end of the bottom 41, and hinged by flexible strips 43 to the side margins of the bottom, are the side walls 44. Extending inwardly from and at right angles to each end of said side walls are the end-walls 45, said end walls occupying and adapted to operate in the space between the parallel walls 42. In order to hold the side-walls at any point of adjustment desired, I provide a means to clamp the walls 42 against the end walls 45, consisting of a metal strip 46, which 'is secured in recesses,

- formed in the outer walls 42, and bowed metal-strips 47 resting in recesses in the inner walls 42, the said strips 47 being bowed inwardly as shown. The strips 47 are each provided with a screw-threaded opening which are engaged by the threaded portions of adjusting bolts 48, which also pass through the strips 47, and the end walls 42.

The inner margin of the end walls 45 are recessed at 49, that the case may be snugly closed. Now, when it is desired to secure the case in any desired position of adjustment, by operating the screw-bolts 48, the inner strips 47 are caused to bind tightly at their ends against the inner walls 42, thus causing the parallel walls 42 to bind upon or frictionally engage the end-walls 45, so that they shall be held at any desired point of adjustment.

Having thus described my invention, what- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A file-case, comprising a bottom, vertical end-pieces extending upwardly from the bottom, and sides hinged at their lower margins to the bottom, and end-walls carried by said sides and projectinginwardly therefrom, and segmental-slots formed in said end-walls, and bolts passing through the end-pieces of the bottom and engaging said slots, and clamping-nuts engaging said bolts, substantially as set forth.

2. A file-case, comprising a bottom, parallel end walls rising from said bottom, sides hinged to the bottom, and having end-walls fitting and adapted to operate between said parallel walls, and forming when closed the end-walls of the case and clamping bolts passing through said end-walls to cause them to frictionally engage the end-walls of the sides, substantially as set forth.
