UNITE TATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HAMMOND, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,165, dated January 23, 1866.
To all tan-mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HAMMOND, of Bridgeport, Fairfield county, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvenientin Breech-Loadin g Fire-Arms; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of a pistol complete with myinvention attached. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of my improvement.
This invention consists of an extractor to remove the shells of metallic cartridges after firing, and is applied to a revolving fire-arm, as shown in the drawings, and as I will now describe.
A is the chambered cylinder as used in ordinary. revolvers, turning on the pin B, on which it is held by the screw a. Over this cylinder I fit a shell, 0, which fits down hehind the rim of the cartridgeshell, as shown in Fig. 3. This shell has a stop screw or pin to keep it from sliding off the cylinder.
In operation the cylinder is not removed from the frame, being fastened to the pin B by the screw a; but the shell C is drawn backward or outward (thepistol being opened and in the position shown in Fig. 1) and takes with it the shells, thus removing them and allowing them to fall out. In this arrangement the shells are all removed at once by a single motion and without removing the cylinders.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cartridge-shell extractor for revolving fire-arms herein describethconsistiug of an external sleeve or thimble fittin g over the cylinder and down behind rim of the cartridge and sliding on the cylinder, substantially in the manner herein set forth.
HENRY HAMMOND.
