NE NATIONAL UNITE STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
JACOB R. SCOTT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LEATHER-SCORING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,709, dated May 29, 1894.
Application filed September 21, 1893. serial No. 486,112. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB R. SCOTT, acitizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York,
have invented new and useful Improvements illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which Figure 1 represents a face elevation of the machine. Fig. 2 is a section along as a; Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section along y y Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a presser roller. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a sole scored by the machine.
In the drawings the letter A indicates a frame or support in which are journaled a presser roller B and feed roller 0 connected by gears D, one of the gears being driven by the gear Wheel E actuated by the gear F receiving motion from pulley G through the medium of clutch H. The clutch is moved by slide I actuated by bell crank lever K fulcrumed at L. To the lever K is connected a rod or link M moved by the operator in any suitable manner as by a treadle (not shown). When the rod M is moved against the pressure of spring N the lever K moves the slide I so as to carry clutch H to its engaging position. When the rod M is released the spring N will move the clutch to its releasing position.
The roller 0 is provided with teeth 0 having longitudinal cutting edges extending in a direction parallel with the axis of the said roller, and the roller B carries a plate or projection P conveniently called a form. When a piece of material or a blank Q such as a piece of leather or an insole is passed between the rollers B C the parts of the material coming into contact with the form P will be pressed by the latter against the teeth 0 so as to be dented or scored, while the remaining parts of the blank Q are left unscored as seen in Fig. 5.
By arranging the teeth 0 in the form of separate toothed disks or in other words interrupting the teeth along the direction of the roller axis the scores will not extend continuously or in lines across the blank but will be interrupted as seen in Fig. 5.
The strippers R rest loosely about the shaft of roller 0, thebottoms or lower edges of the strippers resting on a stripper-rest composed of a stationary platform A constituting a part of the main frame A, so that the strip pers are'held stationary and prevented from turning. The upper edges of the strippers are curved and operate to take the blank Q from the teeth or cutters O as the blank is fed from the table S through the rollers B and O.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a rotary feed-roller composed of disks provided with teeth having longitudinal cutting edges extending parallel with the axis of the roller, a presser roller having a projecting form for pressing part of the material acted on upon the said longitudinal cutting edges of the teeth of the feedroller, strippers strung upon the feed-roller and bodily arranged between the disks thereof for removing the material acted on from the teeth of the said disks, means whereby the strippers are held stationary between the disks, and gearing for rotating the feed-roller and presser-roller, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a rotary feedroller composed of disks having teeth or cutters, of a presser-roller having a projecting form for pressing part of the material acted on upon the teeth or cutters of the disks, and stationary strippers interposed between the disks of the feed-roller and having curved upper edges extending between the disks and operating to remove the material acted on from the teeth or cutters of the disks, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a rotary feedroller composed of disks having teeth or cutters, of a presser-roller having a projecting form for pressing part of the material acted on upon the teeth or cutters of the disks, a stripper-rest arranged below the feed-roller, and stationary strippers interposed between the disks of the feed roller and hearing In testimony whereof I have hereunto set against the stripper-rest to hold the strippers my hand in the presence of two subscribing stationary, said strippers having their upper witnesses.
edges extending between the disks and 0p erating, to remove the material acted on from the teeth or cutters of the disks, substantially as described.
