Description

` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK HOFFMAN, OF WEST CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
Iii/.IP ROVEMENTlN MACHINES FOR POLI'SHING WOOD.
Specification formingrpartof Letters Patent.- No. 52,044. dated January 16, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
4Be it known' that I, FRANK HOFFMAN, of West Cambridge, in the coizx'ity of Middlesex and .State of Massachusetts, rave invented an Improved Machine for Planing, Scraping, Smoothing, or Polishing VVopd or various and I do hereby declare Athe same to be fully described in the following specification and represented iu4 the accompanying drawings,.of which- Figure] is a top view, Fig. 2 airont eleg vation,'Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 a transverse section, of it. v
Inthc said drawings, A denotes the frame of the niachine, which is to be suitably formed for supporting the main operative parts, to be` hereinafter described. At one end ot' such frame is a drivin g-shat't, B, which is Sustained in bearings a a, and provided with two ily- D, and a loose pnl? ley, E. A long bar, F, extending across the frame, and duly supported by the carriers or* slides Gr G. has its ends connected with the two ily-wheels by two connecting-rods,H H,applied to crank-pins projectingfro'm t-heni. 'llheslides G Gr are duly supported in horizontal slots I I, made in the flame, the saine being so that the two slides, with .the bar F, may be simultaneously moved longitudinally within the frame. Thesaid bar F goes throughv a' plane-stock, K, which is applied to the bar so as to be' capable of being slid freely in a direction from either of the `carriersGr G.' The said stock is tted with two plane-irons or cutters, b'b, a-r ranged so as to cut in .opposite directionsthat is, so thatJ whichever way the stick may' be moved longitudinally one of, such cutters will be inaction 'ou the article subjected to them-and placed and tixed on aplatform, L, arranged underneath theplane-stock.
Instead of plane-irons, Scrapers or other tools,'for scraping or polishing or for creasing, maybe substituted. j y The platform L should be provided with `mechanism for securing toitlhe piece of wood or article to be. worked or reduced. and such platform should also be furnished with upl M, for the'purpose of itsvertical movements. wil hin guiding it'in Furthermore, the platform is theI frame A.
'supported by'fourcords or chaius,fN N N N,
which are attached to it and. go around pnl to a' weight-holding box, R..
- form L,
that is, the rods leys c c c c, andarefastened to another platform, O, on which weights may be laid for the purpose ot' drawing the platform L, or what may be placed 'on it, up to the plane with the necessary force.
' A bar, P, is arranged alongside ot' the plane-stock, which lhas Atwo d d, that hoolgaround or on .the
project-ions, bar in such manner as to cause the plane to be moved laterally with the bar when the latter 4is so moved. e, go to and around guide-pulleys f f. and
From the said bar two cords, e
thence upward to and around other guide-pulleys, g g, from whence they proceed to and are fastened to a bar, Q. Besides the saidcords there are two others-viz., from the bar P in directions opposite to those ofthe cords ce. The said cords h h go around pulleys i i, and thence down, and are fastened cords .e e hl h and the bars P Q, and the weight box R, loaded with a weight sucieut to draw the plane laterally .on thel bar F, aJ person,
when laying hold ofthe bar Q,cau easily cause the plane, while moving loiigitudinally,
to be moved laterally, asoccasion may require,
over the article to be planed.
, A treadle, T, extending underneath thc platand connected toA it by a cord, U, serves to enable an attendant to depress the said platform, asthe .saine may be necessary. The machine so made has been found to bev y'ery useful for planing orreducin g or-polishing pianoforte tops and other veneered work, it being specially designed therefor. The plane or reducing-implement cuts both ways.
I claim- The combination as well as the arrangement ot' the supporting-bar Fand the mechanism- H H and' cranked Wheels C C-ior moving the said bar and the plancstockover the bed with the planestock K and the weighted box R, the two bars, P Q, theircords e e h h, and the sustaining-pulleys thereof', the whole being substantially as and for the purpose or purposes as hercinbefore set forth. FRANK HOFFMAN.
