J. M. ORAMPTON. SHADE 001w PASTENER.
(No Model.)
No. 519,148. Patented May 1,1894.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. CRAMPTON, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
SHADE-CORD FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,148, dated May 1, 1894.
pp cat on fi February 1 894.. Serial No. 500.546. No model.)
To all whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. ORAMProN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, haveinvented a new Improvement in Shade-Cord Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a view in side elevation of a shadecord fastener constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a view thereof in vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a similar view of one of the modified forms which my invention may assume.
My invention relates to an improvement in shade-cord fasteners, the object being to produce a simple, convenient, efiective and unobtrusive substitute for the ring and eyescrew ordinarily employed, and designed with particular reference to concealing and protecting the upper end of the shade cord.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a shade-cord fastener having a two part head comprising abody and a cap and furnished with a permanently applied projecting screw, and constructed with a cavity to receive the knotted end of the cord, and an opening leading out of the said cavity in line with and opposite to the screw, for the downward passage of the cord. My invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings,
the head of the device is made in two parts,
and consists of a body A, and a cap A, removably applied thereto. The said body A is provided with a projecting screw B, and constructed at its upper end with a bearing shoulder or face a, designed to be seated against the lower edge of the curtain slat when the screw is entered into the same. The lower end of the said body contains an open internally threaded cylindrical chamber a, which receives an externally threaded shoulder 01. formed upon the upper end of the cap A, which is constructed with a longitudinal passage a located opposite to and in line with the screw 13, and designed to receive the shade cord C, the inner end of this passage being enlarged as at a", to receive the knotted inner end C of the said cord. A portion of the said knot may extend into the chamber a formed in the body of the head. The cap A is also constructed with a knurled edge a adapting it to be turned in applying it to and removing it from the body A. It will be readily understood that for connecting the shade cord with the fastener, the cap is removed, and the cord threaded through its passage a and knotted, after which the cap is screwed into the body, whereby the knot is concealed.
As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the head of the device is composed of a cap D, and body D, of sheet-metal, permanently secured together around their meeting edges, the cap being furnished with a projecting screw E,
and the body having a lateral opening 01, through which the cord F, and its knotted end F are passed, and an opening or passage (1 located in line with but opposite to the screw E. In using this device, the end of the cord is passed first through the lateral opening d, and then down through the opening (1, the knotted end F of the cord passing through the opening and seating itself in the bottom of the body around the opening (1.
It will be observed that in both of the described embodiments of my invention, the knotted end of the cord is entirely concealed, and protected, whereby the appearance of the fastener is enhanced. Furthermore, by concealing and protecting the knotted end of the cord, the same is prevented from being chafed and worn or accidentally untied. Again, my improved device is very compact and unobtrusive, and forms a much more elegant fas-' tener than the ring and eye-screw generally used.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations therein as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention. I am aware, however, that a hollow handle adapted to receive the knotted end of a cord, and furnished with an opening through which the cord emerges, and constructed to be secured in place by screws,
is old, and I do not claim such a construction the head being provided with a projecting a y. screw and the cap being constructed with a Having fully described my invention, what passage located opposite to and in line wlth I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters the screw, and the said parts being also con- 5 Patent, isstrncted to contain and conceal the knotted 2o 1.
