BED BRAGE.
No. 518,697. PatentedApr. 24, 1894.
UNITED STATES.
WILLIAM HATI-IORN PATENT OFFICE.
PARKER, OF ROANOKE, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES T. STRICKLAND, OF SAME PLACE.
BED-BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,697, dated April 24, 1894.
' Application filed January 13, 1894. Serial No. 496.785. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,WILLIAM I-IATHORN PAR KER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Roanoke and State of Virginia, have invented certain new I and useful Improvements in Bed-Braces, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bed braces, the obect 1n view being to provide a simple, cheap and efi'ective tightening device by means of which the frame of abedstead may be drawn together to prevent the separation of the JOlHlIS and the springing of the side rails.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bedstead with my invention applied, the brace being in its extended posinon; Fig. 2, a top plan view of the brace, the parts being drawn together; and Fig. 3, a transverse vertical sectional view.
I A designatesaplate upon which is mounted a cam or eccentric B. This cam B is formed with a squared shoulder or nut a, and is so mounted on a screw C as to be free to turn thereon.
. D represents a second or upper plate, said plate being provided with an oblong opening E, the longer diameter of which is in the direction of the width of the plate, so that the cam B which extends up into said opening, acts only on two sides, b, 0, thereof.
To secure the plate D inits proper positibn upon the plate A, it is provided with four slots (Z d, through which extend four pins or guides ee, said pins being headed and screwed into or otherwise securely fastened to the lower plate A.
Each of the plates A and D is provided with two ears or hooks f f for attachment of the straining Wires or cords, the ears on plate A being placed on the opposite end from those on plate D.
Books or screw eyes are secured on the underneath side of the side rails and the head and foot boards, and between these and the ears ff are placed the straining wires.
The face b of the opening E and also the working face of the cam are provided with semicircular openings 9 g into which a pin may be placed to lock the clamp or brace when the parts are in their desired position. This means of locking is not essential to my invention, as the cam may be secured by simply turning down the screw Cwhich forms its axis; or indeed, the binding action of the parts themselves may render any locking means unnecessary.
The parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1, and it being desired to draw the frame together, the cam is turned by means of a wrench applied to nut a, its working face acting against face I) of the opening E, causing the plate D to move over the plateA into the position shown in Fig. 2 where it may be locked by the above mentioned means, if it be found necessary so to do. When the parts assume this position, the straining wires are put under the requisite tension and the bed securely drawn together.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is- 1. In a bed brace orclamp, the combination of the plate A provided with ears or eyes f; plate D mounted on plate A and provided with ears or eyes f, and also an opening E; a cam mounted on plate A and working in the opening E, and means for fastening said cam against movement.
2. In a bed brace or clamp, the combination of the plate A, plate D mounted on plate A and having an opening E; hooks or eyes f f secured at opposite ends of the plates; a cam mounted on plate A and adapted to work within the opening E; pins or guides e e extending from the lower plate through slots in the upper plate, and means for fastening the cam against movement.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
