NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
l WILLIAMKR. MOORE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
CHECK-HOOK.
.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,121, dated. March 2'?, 1894. Application filed August 17, 1893. Serial No. 483,375. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Saddle Check-Hook Springs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in check hooks for harness saddles and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of a spring, combined with a flat plateand adapted to be used in combination with the check hook on a harness saddle for keeping the bridle check rein in place on said hook, all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularlypointed out in the appended claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Figure l, represents a side view of a harness saddle seat and hook, showing my device applied thereto. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the spring and its plate.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings A, designates the seat or part of a -harness saddle which is provided with the usual check rein hook C, and bolt E, for securing the hook thereto.
F, represents a flat metal plate, one end of which is provided with a slot or opening G, through which the bolt, E, passes and secures said plate to the upper face of the seat.
H, indicates a spiral spring, which is arranged horizontally upon the end I, of the plate and is secured at J, thereto by soldering the same or otherwise. This spiral spring terminates in an upwardly extended arm K, which is bent at L, upon itself and said arm is arranged between the end M, of the hook and the seat whereby the passage is sufficiently obstructed to prevent the check rein lof a bridle from becoming accidentally displaced.
In releasing or inserting a check rein through the passage of the, hook the arm yields and permits said rein to pass; after which said arm will assume its normal or vertical position. Thus it will be seen that the operator in releasing or inserting a check rein into the hook, but one hand is required to perform the operation and the spring being sufficiently strong prevents the check rein from becoming accidentally displaced and a device as herein described is durable, ornamental and at the same time cheap to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A check hook comprising the hook proper and a safety spring having a fiat spiral portion and a vertically extended spring arm for closing the entrance to the hook, said spiral portion being secured to a slotted plate adapted to lbe attached to the saddle, substantially as described.
Intestimony whereof Iafflx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WM. R. MOORE.
