IMPROVED HINGE.

Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,604, dated December 19, 1865.

I0 all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, W. C. MCGILL, of Oincinnati, Hamilton county and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to a spring-hinge so constructed as to hold the hinge either open or closed.

Figure l is a perspective view of my improved hinge, attached to a door or shutter or any place where it may be used. Fig. 2shows a section through the hinge, exhibiting the main features of my improvement.

A is one leaf of the hinge, to which is secured the spring a. Springs a have lips a', which pass through slots in the end of leafB of the hinge. The inner, upper, and lower edges of leaf A are turned up at right angles. The inner edge of leaf B is turned up at a slight angle, as shown in Fig. 2.

Operation: The operation of my hinge is to hold a door or shutter either open or closed. The springa, by its pressure upon the two parts of the hinge, serves to incline the hinge in an open and closed position, and when in either position held iirmest.

Having described my improvement in hinges, and the use of operation of its various parts, I make the following claims, which I desire to secure by Letters Patentl. One spring or more connectingand holding together two pieces ot' metal so as to form a hinge, substantially as herein described.

2. Parts A and B, in combination with one spring or more arranged so as to hold the hinge either open or closed, as specified and set forth.
