SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,451, dated January 23, 1894.
Application filed May 27, 1893.
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that we, CHARLEs E. BRoNsoN and LAWRENCE HEILAND, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Detiance, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Ourinvention relates to an improvement in fence-posts.
The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of a panel of fence, showing ourimproved fence-posts. Fig. 2 is atop plan view of one of the plates, showing a T-iron post in section. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view 2o of one of the plates, showing anV L-iron post in section.
Referring to the drawings, A is a section of fencing, consisting in this instance of a post B of L-iron and a post b of T-iron, between which are passed wires C, these wires being secured to the posts in any suitable way, as by threading each wire through a hole in the flange l and fastening it by a tie-wire 2.
D is a base-plate of any suitable material, preferablymetal or terra-cotta,`and provided with an F-shaped vertical opening 3, the depth of which is prolonged by means of a web 4, so asto give a good bearing for the post without unnecessary thickness and weight of plate. This web 4, in connection with diagonal ribs 5 and flanges 6, serve to strengthen the plates and also to give a better frictional hold on the ground to resist side strains on the fence.
Eis an anchor-plate, constructed in a manner similar tothe base-plate D, but preferably of greater linear dimensions. The lower end of each post is provided with two holes for the insertion of suitable pins 7 and 8, one just below the plate and one just above it, in order to prevent Vertical movement of the post.
While it is customary to use angle-iron Serial No. 475,670. (No model.)
posts all of one shape in the same fence, we have shown one post of each kind mentioned in order to better illustrate our invention. It 5o will be observed that by forming the plates with an F-shaped vertical opening, either shape of bar-iron may be used for posts without the necessity of any filling between the plates and posts.
In constructing a fence with our improved posts, the post is tirst inserted into the baseplate, the pins 7 and 8 put in place, and thel post set in the post-hole. The dirt is tamped in on top of the base-plate to within about 6o six inches ofthe surface ot' the ground, the anchor-plate then slipped onto the post, and the remainderof `the post-hole iilled up, after which the wires may be stretched to the posts.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a fence, a base-plate having am F shaped aperture, a vertical web, surrounding said aperture an anchor-plate similarly con- 7o structed, and an angle -iron post passed through the apertures in the plates and bearing against the webs. p
2. In a fence, a base-plate having a vertical F-shaped aperture surrounded by a vertical i web on the under side of the plate and provided with ribs and anges, an anchor-plate similarly constructed, and a post of angle-iron passed through the apertures in the plates and bearing against the vertical webs.
3. In a fence, a base-plate having a vertical F -shaped aperture surrounded by a vertical web on the under side of the plate and provided with ribs and iianges, an anchor-plate similarly constructed, and au angle-iron post passed through the apertures in the plates and keyed to the base-plate.
