UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE J. B. RODWELL, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE RODWELL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SIGN-LETTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,281, dated January 23, 1894.
Application filed February 16, 1891- Serial No. 381,545. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. B. RODWELL, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful of windows to form a sign thereon.
The chief object of this invention is to pro Vide the letter or symbol with more convenient and more efiective and reliable means for attaching the same to the glass, and to that end the invention consists essentially in the combination with the sign-letter or symbol of an attaching flange formed separately from said sign or symbol and attached thereto as hereinafter more fully described and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the annexed drawings Figure 1 is a front view of a sign-letter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line w, 00, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section on line y, y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
arepresents the sign letter which may be formed of any suitable material. I preferably stamp the same out of sheet metal of sufficientstiffness to retain it in its proper shape, and in order to allow said letter to be secured to the inside of a window and cause it to present an attractive appearance I form it with a longitudinal recess or depression d in its front. Letters of such form and material are usually difiicult to attach to the glass owing chiefly to liability of the letter being warped or having itsattaching edges not in a sufficiently uniform plane to come to a uniform bearing on the glass. To obviate this difficulty I form the usual attaching flange c separate from the letter or symbol and secure it thereto either by cementing or soldering it thereon. The body of the letter I form with its edges presented at the front of the letter. In order to more securely attach said flange to the letter I form said flange by attaching to the back of the letter a sheet -b of flexible or pliable material preferably of soft metal such as sheet lead or tin and of a sufficient width to project from the edges of the letter and form the flange -c. This flange being thus composed of soft or pliable material allows it to readily conform to the surface of the class to which it is to be attached, and thus the operation of attaching the letter is greatly facilitated, and the attachment is rendered perfectly secure. The cement e by which the letter is to be attached is applied to the front of the flange -c and by coloring said cement the letter receives an ornamental border of the width of the said flange as shown.
I do not limit the application of my improvement to a metallic letter or symbol inasmuch as the described means of attaching the letter or symbol does not depend 011 the material of the letter and is equally as useful for attaching letters or symbols composed of porcelain, or other well known material. A
The essential feature of my invention consists in providing a letter or symbol of stiff material with an attaching flange of pliable or flexible material.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Asign letter formed witha recessed front or obverse side and having its edges toward the front, and an attaching flange of flexible material, separately formed, extending outward from said edges along the back of said letter and secured thereto, the whole adapted to be secured to a transparent surface with its front or obverse side next to said transparent surface, substantially as specified.
2. A sign letter formed with a recessed front or obverse side and having its edges toward the front, and a separately-formed attaching flange of flexible material secured to said edges, and integral with a sheet of flexible material secured to and covering the back of the letter, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this lth dayof February, 1891.
GEORGE J. B. RODWELL. [II- 3.]
