UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT s. KNODE, or OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
POWDER- BLOWER.
SPIEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,189, dated January 23, 1894. Application filed'J'anusry 10, 1898. Serial No. 457,949. on model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT S. Know, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Im-' provements in Powder-Blowers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the, accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to a new and novel powder blower.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple device adapted to be used both as a stopper and a powder blower.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 shows a vial in section having my improved blower inserted as a stopper; while Fig. 2 is a sectional view of my device.
In the treatment of a great many diseases, especially those of the nose, the prescriptions call for dry powders which are to be injected into the nostrils, which is usually accomplished by blowing the powder into the nostrils by means of a gentle air blast.
To provide a neat, simple and compact device adapted to be used as a powder bloweris the aim of this invention, which comprises essentially a body portion A, of any suitable size or material, such as wood or rubber, the. lower portion B of which is slightly conical, so as to fit into the neck of a suitable vial or bottle, while the upper portion 0 is conical, and shaped something like an acorn, so that the stopper may be nicely inserted into the nose openings. At the lower end, I have, to
facilitate the operation of the device, removed a portion a of the end B, from the center of which I lead an openihg c to the apex of the cone 0, as will be noticed in referring to Fig. 2.
Extending from the central or body portion of the blower is an opening 0', which passes downward and terminates centrally within the fiat portion B. Above I have inserted a.
rubber F secured by means of suitable pins,
which acts in the capacity of a valve, permitting the air to enter but not leave by way of this opening 0'.
The operation of my powder blower, which is preferably made in one piece, is as follows: The powder to be administered is placed in a vial provided with a stopper constructed as described. The top 0 is then inserted into a nostril, when the bulb D is compressed, forcing the confined air through the tube e into the vial, and escaping powder laden through the unobstructed passage 0 into the nostril. This operation may be repeated at will. The
valve F prevents any powder from escaping through and into the bulb.
The device is noticeable because of its extreme simplicity, and Y Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
As a new article the combination of the powder blower A having the upper conical portion 0 and the lower stopper portion B, the openings 0, cf, the latter provided below with the valve F, the tube 6, and the airbulb D, all arranged to operate substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT S. KNODE.
