Be it known that I, NILS EMERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Pocket-Book and Satchel Lock, &c.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My improvement consists in a combined pocket book and satchel lock, making a secure and reliable fastening for pocket books, valises and traveling bags constructed with a frame having two parts or jaws, each part having a recess on the inside in which are located hooks, springs, aslide andacam. The springs and slide are operated by means of push-buttons located on the outside of frame locking and unlocking the device without the use of a key.

The push-buttons are marked :0, y, e, and a The frame of this lock consists of two parts or jaws which work with a hinge at each extremity Fig. 4, and having a recess on the inside in which are located the locking devices. The spring I), is a long narrow piece of spring steel one extremity of which is riveted to one section or jaw of the frame, Fig. 3,the other extremity of the spring being left movable and having a notch at 0, see Fig. 6 at which point the spring receives hook a on closing the pocket book, the hook passing under the spring at a right angle and having a flaring point such that when it comes in contact with the spring it presses the spring out ofposition, sufficient to allow the end of the hook to pass by it, and when the pocket book is fully closed the spring flies back into the book, holding the frame closed; and when said spring and hook are thus engaged the spring is held into the hook a or locked by means of slide 01, the end of which marked g, is constructed narrow and wedge shaped, and is moved over the end of spring I), passing between said spring and the inner surface of the frame filling the space between spring and frame, locking the spring as described. When slide d, is thus adjusted over spring I), slide d, is held in this position by means of spring a, which drops behind it making contact with end of 01, marked f, see Figs. 3 and 6, which end of slide has a square shoulder, which receives the end of c which also has a square shoulder thus locking slide d, Figs. 8 and 6, the end of spring 0, remote from slide d, being riveted to the frame, the end of 0, coming in contactwith d, being movable and operated by push button so, which is attached to the spring by a short shaft extending through an oblong slot in. the frame. On the sides and upper surfaces of frame are placed other stationary buttons of same form and size as those attached to the springs and slide, which are for the purpose of making the discovery of the combination of the look more difficult.

All the springs are made of such strength and tension as to be easily operated by the fingers, pushing upon the buttons named.

A combined pocket book and satchel lock consisting of two pivotally connected jaws, provided with external push buttons 01:, y, z, and 2 one of said jaws provided with a spring I), connected to push button z, and provided on its movable end with a notch 0,a wedge shaped slide (1 to hold spring I), in its position, operated by push button 5 and spring 0, adapted to be moved by button so, which holds slide d, in its moved position, the other of said jaws being provided with a spring b connected to push button y, and provided on its movable end, with a notch p, adapted to engage hook or on the other jaw, which spring is locked by can] 6 and a hook at adapted to engage in the notch of spring 12 substantially as described.
