UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JosEPrrw. SINZ, 0F ANAcoNDA, MONTANA.
NEWSPAPER-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,366, dated December 26,1893.
Application filed March 16, 1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. SINZ, of Anaconda, county of Deer Lodge, and State of Montana, haveinventedacertain new and useful N ewspaper-Holder, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to produce a device for receiving and holding newspapers, for example, as they are delivered by a carrier, which is adapted to hold them securely, and prevent their becoming soiled, or being blown away.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my holder closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view open. Fig. 3 shows the holder in the act of closing.
Referring to the figures on the drawings, 1 indicates any suitable support which maybe secured to the side of a house for example, as by screws 2.
3 indicates an arm projecting preferably at right angles from the support, and carrying thereon a spring-actuated outwardly-hinged arm 4. The spring may be, for example, shaped as shown in the drawings having a coil 5 and two angular arms 6 and 7, respect" ively, adapted to engage with notches 8 and 9, respectively, in the fixed and hinge-arm. The coil in the spring serves as a pivot, and the spring tends to keep the hinge-arm closed against the fixed arm.
10 indicates a jack-knife lever, pivoted at one end to the fixed arm, as at 11, and pivotally connected in the other arm, 12, as indicated at 13, at a distance from the joint equal to the distance of the pivot 11 from the joint.
Serial No. 466,269. No model.)
The free end of the arm 12 projects beyond the end of the hinge-arm. By grasping the end of the lever and raising it the hinge-arm is elevated until the joint of the lever is completely open. In this position, as shown in Fig. 2, the hinge-arm is supported by the lever. In this position the device is ready for the reception of the paper. The carrier throws the paper against the joint of the lever 10 and breaks it, whereupon the hinge-arm snaps against the fixed arm and secures the paper between the two arms. The opposite faces of the fixed arm and hinge-arm are preferably correlatively corrugated, as illustrated.
I do not limit myself to the details of construction herein shown and described, but reserve the right to modify and vary them at will within the scope of my invention.
What I claim is 1. In a newspaper-holder, the combination with a support and fixed arm, of a springactuated hinge-arm and jointed lever adapted to hold the arms apart and to be broken by striking the joint, substantially as set forth.
2. In a newspaper-holder, the combination with a'support and fixed arm, of a hinge-arm, a spring having a coil, angular arms engaging with the fixed arm and with the hinge-arm, and a jointed lever adapted to operate and support the arms, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of all which I have hereunto subscribed my name.
-. JOSEPH W. SINZ.
