BOOK-LEAF HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,122, dated December 19, 1893. Application filed June 17, 1893. Serial No. 477,895. (No model.)

.To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Inghain and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Book-Leaf Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, whichform a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in book leaf holders, or more plainly speaking a device for holding open the leaves of a book to prevent their turning, and the object of my invention is the provision of a device of and detached from a book; which can be quickly and easily manipulated to permit the turning of the leaves when necessary; which will be compact and attractive in appearance and which can be produced at a very low price thus producing a book holder or clamp which will be useful and practical.

To attain the desired objects the invention consists of a book leaf holder embodying a clamp or clasp for holding the device in place, said clamp having a spring and a book holding arm operating in conjunction with the spring of the clamp to hold the leaves in open position.

The invention further consists of a book leaf holder comprising a clamping base having one end doubled or .bent to form a spring, and a leaf holding arm operating in conjunction with said spring to hold the leaves.

The invention further consists of a book leaf holder or clamp embodying novel features ofconslruction and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein.

In order that the details of construction and the operation and advantages of my device may be readily understood I have illustrated a book leaf holder constructed accord- Figure 1 represents a top plan view of my improved book leaf holder applied in opera- 5o tive position to a book, to clearly show the manner of using. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the holder detached with the book or leaf holding lever thrown back to show the manner of connecting the transverse 5 5 rod or bar, and Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the device applied.

Referring by numerals to the drawings The numeral 1 designates the base having the upper end bent or doubled to form the spring 2, and to the base is secured or formed integral the spring arm 3 which in connection with'the base forms a clamp which engages the cover of the book for securing the device to the book. From the base rise the ears or uprights 4 in which is mounted the shaft or rod 5 and on said rod is pivoted the ears 6 of the lever 7, having the head, bend or ear 8 which normally bears against the spring2 of the base and the action of the spring is to force the lever down and cause the transverse rod 9 which is connected to the under face of the lever to bear upon the leaves and hold the book open and prevent the leaves from turning, and the rod is provided with the extensions 9 which permit the rod to be elevated with ease and also bear more properly upon the leaves of the book. The rod is secured to the under face of the cam lever preferably as shown although it maybe attached in any other way if desired.

It willbe seen that the device can be quickly and easily applied and that the leaves of the book will be retained open and when necessary to turn the leaves the lever can be readily lifted to release the leaves and permit turning, and that the device is simple, compact, durable and inexpensive and will commend itself as a practical and useful device for holding open the leaves of a book and furthercom- 9o ment is unnecessary.
