UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADELAIDE V. DEARSTYNE, OF VEST TROY, NEW YORK, ADMINISTRATRIX OF PETER F. DEARS'IYNE, DECEASED, ASSIGNOR TO RICHARD H. DEAR- STYNE, OF SAME PLACE.
WH EELBARROW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 5 1 1,045, dated December 19, 1893.
Application tiled October 19, 1393. Serial No. 488,656. (N mfel.)
To all whom it' may concern.-
Beit known that PETER F. DEARSTYNE, deceased, late a citizen of the United States, resident at West Troy, in the county of Albany and State of New York, did invent new and useful Improvements in lWheelbarrows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wheelbarrow provided with an automatically shifting box,
le or receptacle in which the load is carried; and the object of the invention is to provide facilities whereby said box can be maintained on a horizontal plane irrespective ot any angularity in which the frame of the barrow may assume. This object is attained bythe construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, being herein referred to, form part of this specification.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevazo tion of the wheelbarrow resting on a level plane. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the handles raised; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of Fig. 1 at the line X X.
As represented in the drawings, A desig- 2 5 nates the frame-Work of the wheelbarrow made in a common and well-known form; said fratne-w0rk embraces side-bars, 1, having handles, 2, at one extremity, and connected together by cross-ties, 3, which are indicated 3o by dotted lines on Figs. 1 and 2. At the extremity of said frame-work opposite tosaid handles, a wheel, B, is arranged in the usual manner.
C designates brackets erected on each ot' the side-bars 1 for tbe purpose of carrying curved tracks D, and the latter are preferablysecured to said brackets in such manner that the upper end of each bracket will form a stop, 4, at each end of said tracks.
D designates the curved tracks which are made of metallic bars bent edgewise to form arcs of circles of any suitable diameter; said tracks are arranged directly opposite to each other in parallel lines, and the opposite ends of each track are secured to the corresponding bracket C.
E designates the shifting box, or receptacle, which is preferably made in the form shown in the drawings, but it may have any form 5o suited to the purpose for which it is intended;
pendent from the under side of said box are hangers, 5, each of which is provided with a stud, 6, on which a grooved wheel, 7, is iitted to rotate; said wheels are arranged to travel on the concave upper edges of the tracks A retainer, S, is fixed to each hanger 5 and is provided with an inwardly-turned limb, 9, which extends under the lower side of the corresponding track D and prevents the accidental displacement of the box E from the tracks D.
Vhen the wheelbarrow is resting on its legs, 10, the shifting box E Will be carried, by gravity, into the position shown in Fig. 1, on raising the handles Z-as shown in Fig. 2- said box will rnn forward on the tracks D, so as to carry the weight of the load nearer to the wheel B, and when the Wheelbarrow 1s inclined in the opposite direction the box E will move rearward, but in all of said changes the boxE will retain alevel position. vVhen it is required to dump the load from the box E, said dumping can be effected by tilting the wheelbarrow toward the side from which the dumping is to be made, and, by reason of the retainers E, said operation can be effected without displacing the box E from the tracks D.
That is claimed as this invention is- 1. In a wheelbarrow, a combination of a frame-work provided with handles at one end and a wheel at the opposite end; said framework having curved tracks erected thereon with their concave edges upward, and a shitting box provided with wheels :titted to run on said tracks, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a wheelbarrow, the combination of a Wheelbarrow frame provided with a Wheel and having curved tracks erected thereon, stops at opposite ends of said tracks, and a shifting box provided with Wheels fitted to run on said tracks and retainers fitted to take under said tracks, as and for the purpose specified.
