SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,290, dated December 5, 1893.

To all whom it may concern-.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. RENEAR, of Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Booinerahg, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in toys; and the object of my invention is to produce a very simple,inexpensive but fascinating toy, which embodies the principle of the Australian boomerang; which, however, is adapted to be thrown by means ofa gun or suitable instrument, instead of by hand, and which, instead of being used as a weapon,is constructed purposely so as to be absolutely harmless.

A feature of my invention consists of the structure of the boomerang which makes it harmless; and another object of my invention is to produce a toy which will belargely used and which may be made to serve to ad" vantage the purposes of an advertising devlce.

To these ends my invention consists of a toy, the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a partof this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicat corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the toy boomerang embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of a portion of the boomerang, showing one method of roughening its surface so that a coat of paint may stick well to it. Fig. 4 is a view, similar to that shown in Fig. 3, but illustrating a different method of roughening; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail longitudinal section of a portion of the boomerang, showing the paint applied thereto.

The boomerang 10 is shaped in a general way like the well known Australian boomerang, and comprises two essentially flat arms 11 which extend at angles to each other and which are united at the elbow 12. The body of the boomerang is thin and fiat, as shown in Fig. 2, though the arms are twisted slightly as illustrated in the same figure; and to prevent it from doing any injury to articles with which it may come in contact in its flight, it is provided with a thickened and rounded edge or flange 13 which extends entirely around the edge, except at places op posite the elbow 12. It is necessary that this portion be left perfectly flat and thin in order to secure a proper flight of the instrument.

The boomerang has its sides roughened after the manner of a file, as shown at 14 in Figs. 3 and 4, one of these views showing parallel cuts and the other showing the well known intersecting cut, but the surface of the boomerang may be roughened in any other suitable way. The object of this roughening is to enable a coat of paint 15 to be applied to the surface of the boomerang, and to adhere firmly so that it will not become loose even after long wear.

The object of painting the boomerang is to increase its durability and also to make it attractive as an advertising device, and advertising matter may be arranged on it in any desired way.

The boomerang is projected by means of a suitable instrument which strikes violently against one of the arms 11, and it acts like the Australian boomerang, describing an irregular circle in its course and returning to a point near that from which it starts. It is made preferably of aluminium, but it may be made of papier-mach or other material having the necessary strength andlightness. It has, apparently, an erratic path when projected and it is somewhat difficult to'dodge, but its extreme lightness and its protected edges render it harmless, so that if it does hit a person no painful injuries ensue.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A boomerang, having arms extending at an angle to each other and provided with rounded edge flanges, substantiallyas described.

2. Aboomerang, having flat arms extending at an angle to each other and twisted slightly, and a safety edge flange extending around the edges of the arms and terminating near the elbow of the boomerang, substantially as described.

3. Aboomeranghavingangularly extending flat arms with roughened faces and rounded edges, substantially as described.
