UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
MILTON WENDELL CASE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHECK-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,158, dated December 5, 1893. Application filed April 13,1393. Serial No. 470,263. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON WENDELL CASE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Check-Bits, which im'-' provement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a check bit formed of side bars somewhat U-shaped, a cross rod connected with the outer ends of the lower limbs of said bars, and a chin strap attached to said bars, between their ends and crowns, said rod entering the mouth of the horse or animal, and said strap being under the lower jaw thereof. The upperlimb 0f the bars is provided with loops for attachment of an overdraw check rein, it being seen that the device afiords an easy and painless method of keeping. the head of the animal in any desired position. The bit is held by the leverage of the side bars. The tension on the mouth may be relieved by adjustment of the chin strap and check rein, and no irritating rings, loops 'or straps are attached to the mouth portion of the bit, the construction being hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a side elevationof a check bit embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates the side bars of the bit, each of the same being formed of a piece of material somewhat U-shaped, constituting a lower limb B adapted to be passed under the under jaw,
and is provided with buckles, whereby it may be adjusted. On the outer end of the upper limb E of the bars are eyes F, for attachment of an overdraw check rein, it being noticed that said bars retain the bit in place in front of the front molar teeth of the upper jaw, thus keeping the rest close to the point of the chin, and the head is kept in position by a lift equally divided between the chin rest and the bit in the mouth, the liftbeing connected with the side bars to which are also secured the straps of the overdraw check.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A check bit having side bars of U shape, the mouth piece being connected with the outer ends of the lower limbs of said bars, said lower limbs having openings therein, and an adjustable chin strap secured in said openings, the upper limbs, being provided with eyes to receive an overdraw strap, said parts being combined substantially as-described.
