Description

(No Model.)
G. B. HAINES. ICE VELOOIPEDE! No. 510,133. Patented Dec. 5, 1893.,
liven ar'.
w h m @M/ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. HAINES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ICE-VELOCIPEDE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 510,133, dated December 5, 1893.
Applieationfiled February 2, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. HAINES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Velocipedes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which The figure is a side elevation of the ice velocipede as it appears when in use.
This invention relates to improvements in bicycle-sleds and consists of certain novel features in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the different parts as will be hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawing, A is the main runner, B the steering runner located in advance of, and in line with, the main runner. The lower end of the steering rod, 0, is rigidly secured to the steering-runner B and is provided on the upper end with a steeringhandle 0'. A framing-bar C connects the steering-rod O and the main runner so as to maintain the two runners in their proper relative position. The connecting-bar D, supporting the seat D, also has its ends connected to the main runner and the steering-rod respectively. The propelling spur-wheel E is mounted on the axle-shaft E" and rests on the surface. The aXle-shaft is journaled in the rear end of the forked arm F. The spokes a of the propelling-wheel project through the rim a and terminate in the flattened serrated ends a so as to engage more positively with the ice or snow surface. The hub 12 of the propelling-wheel, is extended at one side and has the sprocket-wheel, G, rigidly mounted thereon. The front end of arm F is suitably secured in a coupling 1) projecting at one side of the upper part of the runner A, and then extends through the opening in the Serial No. 420,100. (No model.)
runner to the other sidethereof and has pivoted on its lower end the driving wheel E, which coupling provides a bearing for the crank-shaft 1) having the treadles b b mounted on the respective ends thereof. A sprocket-wheel b is mounted on the crank-shaft and is connected with the companion sprocketwheel, G, by means of link-belt b whereby the required power and motion are transmitted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g 1. In an ice velocipede, the combination of a main runner, a steering-runner located in advance thereof, a steering-rod secured at its lower end to the steering-runner and carrying a steering-handle at its upper end, a framing-bar mounted upon the lower portion of the steering-rod and connecting with the front portion of the main-runner, and a conmeeting-bar mounted upon the upper portion of the steering-rod and connecting with the rear portion of the main runner.
2. In an ice velocipede, the combination of a main runner, a steering-runner located in advance thereof, a steering-rod secured at its lower end to the steering-runn er and carrying a steering-handle atits upper end, aframingbar mounted upon the lower portion of the steering-rod and connectingwit h the front por tion of the main runner, a connecting bar mounted upon the upper portion of the steering-rod and connecting With the rear portion of the main runner, a coupling projecting from the upper portion of the main runner, a forked arm secured at one end to the coupling and extending rearward and at an angle thereto, and a propelling wheel journaled in the forked portion of the arm.
GEORGE E. HAINES.
