J. H. MACARTNEY. FAN ATTAGHMENTTOR ROCKING CHAIRS. 1%.. 509,926.
Patented Dec. 5
vwemtoz 7% Z/ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. MACARTNEY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
FAN ATTACHMENT FOR ROCKING-CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,926, dated December 5,1893.
Application filed March 27,1893- Sefla1No.467,833- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. MAOARTNEY, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Fan Attachments for Rocking-Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in fan attachments for rocking-chairs, and its object is to provide a contrivance adapted to be attached to rocking-chairs, particularly those of the base-rocker type, which contrivance may be capable of holding a fan, and be so constructed and arranged that in the ordinary act of rocking it may be operated to fan the occupant of the chair.
My invention more particularly resides in the novel combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fullydescribed and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing I have represented in perspective, a rocking chair with my invention attached.
A represents the base and B the rocking portion of a base rocking-chair.
Extending inwardly from and at right angles to the base A is a rod C to the outer end of which is loosely secured by means of the nut D, the connecting rod E, the upper end of which is in turn loosely secured to the rocking shaft F, which carries the segment G of a pinion and which turns in a bracket or bearing H, which is secured to upright portion I of the rocking-chair.
Extending upward through the bearing J is the flat bar or rod K on the upper and lower portion of which are cut the teeth L which are adapted to mesh with the teeth in the segment G and pinion M, the latter being secured to a shaft N, which passes through bearings O secured to the back of the rocker B.
At the extremities of the shaftN are secured by means of nuts Pthe fans Q, which extend forward over the seat of the chair.
I do not confine myself to any particular fornrof the fans N.
It will be readily seen from the drawing that the fans are detachable, also that when it is desired the connecting rod E may be detached from the rod C thus throwing the device out of operation.
With this construction, the fans being properly adjusted, the occupant of the chair may by merely rocking in the ordinary manner impart an oscillating up-and-down motion to the fans.
The construction and arrangement of the several parts of my invention being thus made known, the operation and the advantages of the same will, it is thought be readily understood.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a rocking chair attachment, the combination with a swinging chair back of a segment pivotally secured to one side of the lower portion thereof, an elongated curved vertically disposed rack bar having teeth near its opposite ends, an upper pinion in line with the segment, said rack bar engaging said pinion and segment, a transverse shaft on which said pinion is mounted, fans on opposite ends of said shaft and means for oscillating said segment, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN H. MACARTNEY.
