NIS JOHNSON, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE MERIDEN BRONZE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
FILLING-INDICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,170, dated November 21, 1893.
Serial No.'482,139. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NIS JOHNSON, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Filling-Indicators for the Founts of Oil-Burning Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a broken view in vertical section of a lampfount provided with a filling-indicator constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a detached plan view of the nipple with its cap removed. Y
Myinvention relates to an improvernentin lling-indicators for the founts of oil-burning lamps, the object being to produce a simple, cheap and effective device.
With these ends in View, my invention consists in a filling indicator having certain details of construction as will behereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention, I attach a depending bracket A, directly to the lower end of a filling nipple B, 'which is otherwise of ordinary construction, and adapted to be secured within an opening formed in the top of a lamp-fount C, and to receive a filler cap D. The said bracket A, may, it' desired, be made integral with the nipple, but it will probably be found best to make it independent thereof, and attach it rigidly thereto. The lower end of the bracketisturned inward at a right angle, and constructed with a circular opening a, adapting it to receive a tube E, the upper end of which is expanded, as at e, for the suspension of the tubein the bracket.
The said tube E, containsv a ioat, preferably 1n the form of an inverted tube E, made of aluminum, or some correspondingly light material, and adapted in diameter so as to move freely up and down in the tube E, the lower end of which is closed slightly, as at e', to hold the Iioat-tube F in place against downward displacement.
It will be understood that when the fount is being filled, and as the oil rises therein, the float F, will rise in the tube E, and indicate the rise of oil in the fount. By attaching the bracket directly to, or forming it integral with the nipple, I secure a very simple construction, and one notliable to derangement, while by arranging the tube E, and its float in a vertical plane, the device operates with the minimum of friction, Whereas when the float is arranged to operate otherwise, it may stick, or be retarded, and fail to give its right indication..
, I would have it understood that I do not I broadly claim the combination with a filling nipple, of a bracket and two tubes, but only my particular construction.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a nipple adapted to be inserted int-o the top of a lamp-fount, of a bracket rigidly connected therewith and depending therefrom, and turned inward at a right angle at its lower end, a vertically arranged tube depending from the said lower end of the bracket, and a vertically movable iioat located in the said tube, substantially ascand for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NIS JOHNSON.
