P. W. ALLEN.
HOSE PLIERS.
Patented Oct. 31, 1893.
INVENTOH JWW A TTORNE Y8.
N'ITEI) STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
PETER W. ALLEN, OF PUEBLO, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK S. RAINEY, OF SAME PLACE.
HOSE-PLIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,872, dated October 31, 1893.
Application filed July 24, 1893- Serial No.481,286. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, PETER W. ALLEN, of Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hose-Pliers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forminga part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved hose pliers, showing the pliers applied to a hose band preparatory to putting it under strain. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the position of. the hose pliers when applying strain to the hose band. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan viewof the lower jaw of the pliers. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the hose band; and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a piece of hose to which the band has been applied.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the Views.
The object of my invention is to providea simple and efficient tool for applying a hoseband formed of annealed wireto rubber hose, for the purpose of fastening the hose to couplings and connections.
My invention consists in a pair of pliers having the jaws arranged to separate as the handles are forced together, one of the jaws being provided with a nose for engaging the looped end of the hose band, the other being furnished with a clamp for engaging the free ends of the hose hand, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The handles A A of the pliers are pivoted together at a, the handle A being provided with a jaw B, the handle A being furnished with a jaw B. The jaw B is provided with a transverse notch 12 in its free end, and with lugs c on opposite sides of the jaw near the top and bottom. To the handle A,near the pivot, is pivoted a stirrup or bail O, which extends beyond and across the notched end of the jaw B. The end of the'jaw B is furnished with a nose dfor engaging the looped end e of the wire band D. The wire band D is formed of a piece of wire bent twice at right angles, the arms so formed extending parallel with each other, the loop being curved into circular form, as shown in Fig. 4.. The
band D is placed loosely on the hose E, with the free ends of the wire extending through the looped end, and the nose (1 of the pliers is inserted in the looped end of the band, while the free parallel ends of the wire extend upwardly through the stirrup C. By pressing the handles A A toward each other, thejaws B B, are separated and at the same time the stirrup or bail O is drawn toward the jawB, forcing the ends of the wire band into the transverse notch b in the end of the jaw B, thus giving the pliers a firm hold upon the looped end and the open end of the band. By still further pressing the handles A A toward each other, the band is drawn tightly around the hose, as shown in Fig. 2, when the pliers are carried toward the hose, with the looped end 6 of the hand D as the pivot, thus bending the free ends of the band over the looped ends, forming hooks which engage the looped end e in the manner shown in Fig. 5. After releasing the wire from the pliers the free ends are bent down against the hose and out off, when the band presents the appearance shown in Fig. 5. To cause the jaws B B to register, lugs f are formedon the handle A, which close over the handle A, as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, I
. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In hose pliers, the combination with pivoted jaws, one of which is provided with a nose for engaging the looped end of a hose band, of a pivoted bail for clamping the free end of the said band to the other jaw, substantially as described.
2. In a pair of hose pliers, the combination of the handles A A, pivoted together and provided with jaws B B, the jaw B havinga transverse notch b, the jaw B provided with a nose d, and the stirrup O pivoted to the handle A and adapted to enter the notch b, substantially as specified.
PETER WV. ALLEN.
