CAR-DOOR FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters went Nb. 506,064, dated octo'ber-s, 1893.
Application filed October 10, 1892. Serial No. 448,384. (No'modeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN B. NOWLAND, of Harvey, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Door Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in car door fasteners, and consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts more specifically set out in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car and door having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line ccx' of Fig. 1. Fig. 3
is a perspective view. of the gravity latch which is fixed to the door jamb immediately above the spring lock carried by the door; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a spring lock which is fixed to the door.
The object of my invention is to construct a spring fastener that willautomatically lock the door of the car when the same is closed and further in a gravity latch co-operating with said fastener. V
The invention also consists in details of construction hereinafter referred to.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a car body, and 2 the ordinary sliding door for the same which is movably fixed to the car by guideways 3.

the said fastener being slit as shown at 6, the
said slitextending f rom-the spear-shaped end to a suitable distance as best shown in Fig. 4, forming two barbs 7. The solid portion of said fastener is secured to the door2 by bolts 8 in which position the spear-shaped end of said fastener projects a suitable distance from the edge of the door. Formed in the vertical jamb 9 is a square aperture or opening 10 which is of such a size as to allow the spear-shaped end of the fastener 4 to pass when the barbs 7 of the same are compressed. When the door is closed asshown in Figs. 1 and 2 the barbs will open and the shoulders 11 forming a part of said barbed ends will come in contact with the jamb 9 and prevent the door from being opened until the said barbs are compressed.
In practice the fastener 4 is made of steel which renders the barbed ends of the same elastic, or if found desirable an additional spring not shown may be located in the space 6 of said fastener. 12 represents a plate which is fixed to one side of the ja'mb 9 above the opening 10 formed in the same, and is provided with ears '13 to which is movably secured one end of agravity latch 14. After the door is closed and the barbed ends of the fastener assume the position as shown in Fig. 2, the lower end of the said latch will move in the space 6 located between the barbed ends of the fastener, and prevent the said end from being compressed under ordinary circumstances.
Formed in the barbed ends of the fastener are transverse openings 15, and formed in the lower end of the gravity latch 14 is a similar opening 16 which registers-with the opening15 when the said latch is in its normal position. When the latch and the barbed ends of the fastener are in the position as shown in Fig. 2, an ordinary wire may be passed through the openings 15 and 16 and a seal attached in the well known manner.
From the above description the general operation of the device will be understood.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A car door fastener having a spear shaped end and slit to form two barbs, an opening formed in the jamb for the door through which the said barbed end passes, and a gravitylatch movably secured to said jamb above said opening, the lower end of which isadapted to fall between said barbs when the door is closed, substantially as set forth.
2. A car door fastener having a spear shaped end, a split or space 6 formed in said end, a gravity latch adapted to fall into said space, and openings formed in the said spear shaped ends and gravity latch, said openings registering with each other to receive a suitable wire carrying a seal, substantially as set forth.
