A. M. HOUSE. MOLD FOR CASTING LOCK NUTS.
Patented Sept. 26, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBION M. ROUSE, OF BOULDER, ASSIGNOR TO THE BOSS-GRIP LOCK-NUT COMPANY, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
MOLD FOR CASTING LOCK-NUTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,778, dated September 26, 1893.
Application filed October 22, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBION M. HOUSE, of Boulder, in the county of Boulder and State of Colorado, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Molds for Casting Look-Nuts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved mold for casting lock-nuts; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a perspective view of my improved lock-nut. Fig. II is a section, taken on line IIII, Fig. IV, showing one half of the mold in elevation, showing the nut after it has been cast, in elevation. Fig. III is a section taken on line III-III, Fig. IV. Fig. IV is a top view. Fig. V is a section taken on line V-V, Fig. II; and Fig. VI is a section taken on line VIVI, Fig. II.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a mold formed in two pieces, the-dividing line being shown at A, Fig. IV, and the two parts being held together by suitable dowel pins 2, which permit of their ready separation.
3 represents a core having a threaded portion 4:, which forms the thread in the nut, and in the conical extension of the nut. The mold is provided with one or more perforations 5, through which the molten metal is poured to form the nut in the mold, these perforations having upper enlargements 6, so that the metal can be readily poured in.
At the lower ends of the perforations 5, the mold has an interior chamber or portion 5 to form a flange or washer 7 on the nut. Be-
neath this portion 5 the mold has a chamber or portion 8, with vertical-walls, in which the body 9 of thenut is formed. Beneath the portion or chamber 80f the mold, there is a chamber or portion from 10 to 11 which forms Serial No. 449,686. (No model.)
a conical end 12 on the nut. In this latter portion of the mold are placed wings 13, which form slots or perforations 14. in the conical portion of the nut, these wings being secured to or formed upon the mold so as to be part thereof.
As shown in Fig. III, the core 3 decreases in size from the point B downwardly, the re sult being that the interior diameter of the conical portion 12 of the nut is smaller than the interior diameter of the body of the nut, for the purpose of producing an elastic pressure between this portion of the nut and the bolt on which the nut is screwed as fully explained in my application for a patent on the nut itself, which application is filed of eve date herewith, Serial No. 449,688.
By the use of a mold of this character, lock nuts can be very cheaply and quickly produced.
I claim as my invention 1. A mold for forming lock nuts, made in two parts, and having a chamber 5 for forming a flange on the nut,a chamberSfor forming the body of the nut, a chamber 10 for forming the conical portion of the nut, and wings 13 for forming openings in the conical portion of the nut, in combination with a.
