Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. DALE, OF WHALEYSVILLE, MARYLAND.
LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,033, dated September 12, 1893.
Application tiled April 5. 1893. Serial No. 469,170. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN L. DALE, of Whaleysville, in lthe county of Worcester and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Latches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in latches for use on doors, gates and the like and the invention consists in the novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings-Figure l is a face view of my latch as in use, it being shown fastened in full lines and released in dotted lines. Fig.
. 2 is a detail view of the catch. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the latch bar. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the keeper and Fig. 5 shows another form ot' catch.
The door or gate A and the frame or case B into which it closes may be of any ordinary construction the catch O being in operation supported on the frame or case and the latch D on the door.
In practice the latch may be arranged to cross the edge of the door at-an incline as shown or it may be arranged at right angles thereto without departing from the improvement. cut notch or notches C forming locking seats for the latch bar. It is preferred to form these notches in the opposite sides of the catch as shown. In securing the catch it may havea base plate C3 held by screws firmly to the frame as shown in Fig. 1 or it may be provided with a screw shank as shown in Fig. 5
The catch isformed with the under' to screw into the frame. The latch D comprises the spring rod or har E provided at its outer end where it engages the catch with the handle e and the clip F in which the opposite or inner end of the rod E is held.
In connecting the clip and latch rod it is preferred to provide the inner end of said rod with a short lateral projection `or stud e entering an opening or seat f in the arched portion f of the clip. This construction is simple, cheaply eected in manufacturing the latch and operates efficiently to prevent any longitudinal or turning motion of the latch and the rod is usually soldered or otherwise fastened in the clip plate to hold the clip and rod together until the latch is applied for use. The clip has lateral han ge plates F perforated for the screws which secure it in place.
In manufacturing the latch it may be enameled,A nickeled or otherwise ornamented, and may be made of stee1,brass or other suitable metal.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A latch comprising a clip having an arched portion provided with an opening or seat, and
the rod fitted at one end to said arched portion and having a lateral portion or stud to enter said opening or seat substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JNO. L. DALE.
