SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,948, dated September 12, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card-Gases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings hereto annexed.

My invention relates to that class of card cases, in which playing cards are commonly carried; and its object is to provide means for extracting the cards from the case, and also means in connection with the case, for keeping the score of the game.

In the drawings, similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.

Figure l. represents a side view of my improved card case, complete, showing the cover or outer case adjusted over the case proper. Fig. 2. represents a sectional view of the case with the cover removed, through its longest and widest dimension. FigJS. represents a sectional view of the case through the dotted line y. y. (Fig. 2.) showing the cards partially extracted from the case. Figs. 4. 5. and 6. are views of some of the details.

d, represents the card case, consisting of an open ended box, adapted to receive a pack of playing cards, and having one of its sides provided with a sliding bar @,(represcnted in Fig. 5.,) having an arm b, extending from its bottom at right angles thereto, and reaching to the opposite side of said box, and under the pack of cards h. The top of the sliding bar a, is provided with the thumb catch c, by means of which, the bar a, with its arm b, is operated. u

The bar a, slides in a groove formed in the side of the case d, and is held in place, bythe plate e, which is secured over it; which plate is provided with the slot g, adapted to receive the width of the'arxn b. The bar a, is further provided with a series of numbers on its outer surface, commencing with the number 1, at the top of the bar. The cover Z, or outer case, is made to slide over the case d, and is also provided with a sliding bar, similar to the one in the case d, with the exception that it has no projecting arm extending from its inner end.

In order that the sliding bar d, may not be jarred, or moved accidentally from its position, a spring s, is attached to the case, havingits free end bearing against the bar a, through an opening m, as shown in Figs. et. and 6.

The operation of the deviceis as follows:- The cover Z, is removed from the case d, and the cards 7i., extracted therefrom by withdrawing the sliding bar a; as shown in Fig. 3. The bar is then replaced; and as the game proceeds, the score is kept, by drawing out the bars a, until the figure thereon corresponding to the number of points gained, is exposed.

I claim- 1. A card case of the character described, having one of its sides provided with a fiat bar a, having thumb catch c, and arm b, and adapted to slide in a groove in the side ofthe case, and held therein by the plate @,secured to the inside of the case and having slot g, through which the arm b, projects; said bar a, having a series of numbers on its outer face, all as shown, and for the purpose described.

2. A card case of the character described, comprising two `open endedboxes, one adapted to be contained within the other; each having one of its sides provided with a bar, sliding in guides and bearing a series of numbers, whereby is kept the score of the game played with the cards, all as shown and described.
