Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW BOUTON, OF NAPA, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,217, dated October 3, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW BOUTON, of Napa, in the county of Napa and. State of California, have invented a new and Improved Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-- .3 Figure l is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line mac, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same; Fig. 3, a detached view of a pair of supplemental bars pertaining to the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
Thisinvention relates to a new and improved cultivator, designed more especially for cultivating the earth in orchards in California, where the trees branch out quite close to the ground and preclude the plow being used near the trunks of the trees.
My invention consists in connecting together two cultivators, a right and a left hand one, by means'of extension-bars, and having a draft-chain applied to the front ends of the beams of the cultivators, all being arranged as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the earth may be cultivated quite close to the trees.
A A represent two cultivators, which are of V or triangular form, the beams a a of which are parallel with each other, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The outer oblique bars of the cultivators have the shares 7) attached to them, one cultivator being a right and the other a left hand one, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The rear ends of the beams to a are supported by wheels B, which are attached to the lower ends of levers C, the latter being pivoted to the beams and secured at any desired point or angle by means ofa catch, D, engaging with a semicircular plate, E, on the beams. The front ends of the beams are supported by easterwheels F.
The two cultivators are connected by transverse bars G, the ends of which, at the rear parts of the cultivators, are provided with metal rods 0 to fit in eyes (1 on the oblique bars of the cultivators, said bars being encompassed by clips or clamps H, through which bolts pass. The front bars, G, have tcnons at their ends to fit into links 0 at the inner ends of a draft-chain, I, said bars also having clips or clamps H on them, through which bolts pass.
Bars G, of different lengths, may be used, (see Figs. 3 and 4,) according to the width required between the cultivators. The team is attached to the center of chain I, which is taken up and let out to suit the length of the bars G.
By this means it will be seen that the cultivators may be made to pass underneath low branches of the trees, close to the trunks, the depth of the penetration of the shares being graduated by adjusting the levers O of the wheels B.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The right and left cultivators AA, supported by the caster-wheelsF and adjustable wheels B, and connected by transverse bars G, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 2d day of June, 1865.
ANDREW BOUTON.
