POCKET PENCIL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,714, dated July 18, 1893. Application filed March 16, 1893. Serial No. 466,390. (No model.)

My invention relates to an improved pocket pencil holder, and consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and designated in the claims.
The object of my improvement is to construct a device for retaining pencils in the vest or other pocket.
In the drawings: Figure l isa detail elevation of a pocket with my invention applied therein, and a portion of the cloth broken away to more clearly illustrate the location of the parts. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of elastic material of which the holder is made. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken through the elastic holder when the same is twisted and in position.
Referring to the drawings: 1 indicates a metallic frame, the form of which is particularly shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. Each end of the frame 1 is provided with an ear 2 turned backwardly and downwardly from the extremities of said frame. I
In Figs. '2 and 3 I particularly show the blank from which the elastic holder 3 is made, the same consisting of a flat piece 4 of rubber having numerous projecting preferably rounded teeth 5. Each end of the center strip 4 is provided with an enlarged perforated portion 6 which is fitted upon the frame 1 over the ears 2.
In order that the teeth 5 will be presented at a number of diflerent angles I have devised a plan of twisting the elastic construction, which is done by first securing one end of the rubber under the ears 2, then twisting the same a number of times and securing the op-' posite perforated ends 6 under the other ear 2.
The frame 1 is made of a piece of spring wire so that it will conform to the width of the pocket, and the placing of the pencils behind or in front of the'elastic strip prevents their falling out of the pocket by the engagement of the teeth therewith, said teeth projecting at a number of different angles, this being attained by the twisting of the rubber or other elastic material of which the same is made. g
It is believed that this article will prove of value to persons who are in the habit of dropping pencils out of their pockets.
The form of the rubber strip and teeth could be slightly altered without in any way afiecting the idea of my invention.
The pencil holder as above described is also adapted for holding pens, tooth-brushes and other like articles which are often carried in the pocket.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. An improved pocket pencil holder having a number of elastic teeth projecting at different angles and adapted to retain the articles in the pocket, substantially as set forth.
2. An improved pocketpencil holder having a number of elastic teeth projecting from a strip or body held between the two ends of a spring wire frame, substantially as set forth.
3. An improved pocket pencil holder having an elastic body provided with a number of projecting teeth, said elastic body fastened by one end to one extremity of a wire frame, said elastic body then twisted and its opposite end secured to the other extremity of said frame, and this construction adapted to cause the teeth on said body to project at a variety of angles, to hold the articles in the pocket, substantially as set forth.
4:. An improved pocket pencil holder having a wire frame preferably made of spring material, the extremities of said frame connected by an elastic body twisted and having teeth projecting at a variety of angles, said frame adapted to conform to the width of the pocket in which it is to be held, substantially as set forth.
