NOSTRIL- PROTECTOR FOR HORSES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,463, dated July 11, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that we, ADOLPH W. J OERGES and JOHN A. OOONNELL, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Oshkosh,in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N ostril-Protectors for Horses; and we do declare the following to be a full,

- clear, and exact description of the invention,

such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanylng drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to a new article of manufacture viz: a protector for the nostrils of horses when driving against the wind and in dusty or frosty air.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view and Fig. 2a top view of the appllance. Fig.3 represents the manner of adusting the same to the horse.

We do not wish to confine our invention to any particular manner of attaching or adusting the protector to the horses head as it may be adjusted and attached in many different ways, neither do we wish to be confined to the materials used in the construction of the same.

Our invention consists broadly of a strap extending longitudinally on the nose of the horse provided with an inclined flange on each side above or in front of the nostril.

In the accompanying drawings similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

A is the horses head, B the mouth, C O the nostrils.

D is the nose strap of the protector and E E are arched wings or flanges attached at an incline to each side in front of the nostrils so as to provide a guard to break the wind and prevent it from striking directly against the nostrils. The flanges or guards are made preferably of leather but may be made of fine wire netting for protection against dust in warm weather and may be made detachable for this purpose. A horse when breathing through his nostrils exhales in the direction indicated by the dotted lines o c Fig. 2 and the location and shape of the flanges or guards E E are such as not to interfere with the inhalation or exhalation of air in these directions. The protector is preferably attached by means of the strap F attaching to the head-stall of the bridle and the supplemental bit G passing within the horses mouth. The use of this bit will dispense with a so called secret bit in ordinary bridles as the strap F may attach directly to the check-rein.

The manner of attachment as we have before indicated may be varied to adapt the invention to the many different kinds of bridles.

We provide a means of adjusting the bitstrap H in different positions upon the nose strap D by passing it through the double buckle t' two or more of which may be attached along the nose strap.

Having thus described. our invention, what we claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The within described improved article of manufacture, to wit: a wind and dust guard for horses, comprisinga central attaching and Wing supporting portion D, and right and left arched wings E attached in an inclined posi tion to each side of the strap D, the said guard being provided with astrap F by which it can be attached to the head stall of the bridge, the guard being disconnected from the reins and when in use occupyinga central position upon the horses head, its wings being directly in front of the nostrils and to remain fixed in such position in an arched flaring manner so as to permit free inhaling and exhaling at the sides of the nostrils and at the same time prevent wind and dirt striking the nostrils in front, substantially as described.

2. A wind and dust guard for the nostrils of horses, comprising a central attaching and wing supporting portion, right and left arched wings or flanges which extend in front of the nostrils whenin use and prevent the entrance of wind and dust at this point but permit air to enter at the sides of the nostrils, a nose strap B, bit strap H and supplemental bit G, the nose strap, bit strap and supplemental bit forming a part of the guard, substantially as described.
