ISABELLA SHEPARD, OF NILES, MICHIGAN.
HAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No..500,962, dated July 4, 1893.
Application filed November 5, 1892. Serial No. 451,048. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISABELLA SHEPARD, of Niles, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastening Attachments for Ladies Hats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to fasten or hold a ladys hat on her head without the use of a hat pin thrust through the hat, which damages the hat and is sometimes very inconvenient to enter in its proper place.
In using the term fastening attachment to ladies hats, the same is of course designed to include childrens hats.
The invention consists in a strip or piece of linen, silk or other suitable material provided with one or more loops on its lower edge and secured to the hat or bonnet by sewing or otherwise between the hat and its lining, on either side of the hat, and arranged so that the loop or loops of said strip or piece project sufficiently below the portion of the hat, where it is designed to be fastened to the head in order to receive a hair pin made of any suitable material for the purpose, through the loop and into the hair of the head.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 represents a View of the head and shoulder portion of a lady with hat in place on the head and with my invention applied, the hat being broken away in order to show the hat fastening attachment and how it is applied; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal face view of the fastening attachment shown in Fig. 1, detached from the hat.
A indicates the hat, that is one of different styles of hats or bonnets to which the invention may be applied, and b indicates a portion of the lining of the hat on one side of the latter.
0 is the hat fastening strip or piece which is here shown in the form of a piece of gimp but which may be a tape or plain strip or piece of any suitable material, so long as it is made or provided on its lower edge with one or a series of loops d. This strip is secured, by stitching or otherwise, between the hat A and its lining b and arranged so that its loop or loops cl project downwardly below the hat, on either or both sides of the latter, to a sufficient distance to receive through said loop or loops, a hair pin D of rubber, shell or other ISABELLA SHEPA-RD.
