SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,399, dated June 27, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT WILLIAM LACKEY, of Gold Hill, in the county of Storey and State of Nevada, have invented a new and Improved Cable-Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to metallic cables such as are used in mines and other places for raising buckets, propelling cars, cages and the like.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved cable protector, which is simple and durable in construction, readily applied to the cable, and arranged to prevent undue wear on the cable by rubbing on the flanges of the pulleys or drums over which the cable passes.

The invention consists of a staple formed with a head and adapted to be driven with its shanks into the cable, the head resting on the cable to protect the same.

The invention also consists of certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as willbe hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate correnponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement as applied, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the improvement.

The cable A, of any approved construction is provided with staples B, driven into the same and placed suitable distances apart, say about one foot, throughout the length of the cable and on opposite sides thereof.

The staple B is formed with a head B, concave in shape, so as to fit snugly with its under side onto a strand of the cable. The ends B of the head 13 are pointed and curved downward and outward to pass between two strands, to prevent the ends from being caught by the flange of the pulley or drum over which the cable passes.

The shanks B of the staple B are arranged parallel and project from opposite edges of the head B, as plainly shown in Fig. 2, the said shanks being preferably made flat and pointed so as to readily pass between thestrands of the cable,when the staple is driven, transversely into the cable. See Fig. 1.

It will be seen that a cable protector constructed and arranged as described, will prevent the cable from rubbi n g against the flanges of the pulleys or drums over which the cable passes, so that the strands are not worn to any perceptible degree and consequently last a considerable length of time before requiring mending.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A cable protector consisting of a series of staples driven into the cable, with the heads of the staples projecting from the same, substantially as shown and described.

2. A cable protector consisting of a staple having an elongated concave head, and shanks projecting from the edges of the head, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination with a cable, of a series of staples driven into the said cable, each staple comprising an elongated concave head having pointed ends, and parallel shanks extending from the said head at opposite sides thereof,substantially as shown and described.
