UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADRIAN TESTARD, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,224, dated June 27, 1893. Apnlication filed January 26, 1891. Renewed May 8, 1893. Serial No. 473.483. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADRIAN TESTARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of BeXar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The special object of this invention is to make some improvement upon the car coupler patented to me October '7, 1880, and numbered 437,734.
I will first describe my improvements in connection with the drawings and then point them out in the claims.
Figure 1 of the drawings shows two drawheads connected by a link and pin, one being in side-elevation and the other in vertical longitudinal section, so as to illustrate the pin and link mechanism. Fig. 2 is a top plan View.
In the drawings, A represents the drawhead made hollow and flaring outwardly at the mouth in the usual way, while it is provided with an upward extension at between and in whose parallel sides is secured a fulcrum pin 0 for the lever O. Thelatter is jointed at one end to the top of drop-pin D and at the other end to the catch-bar E, which has the shoulder 6 to engage the angle a formed with the under side of the top of the drawhead. As the lever 0 moves its short arm 0 down, the perpendicular line or line of gravity of the catch-bar E will be gradually thrown toward the front of drawhead by the curve a at the bottom of drawhead until the shoulder 6 engages the angle a when the pin will be sustained in a'raised position. On the other hand when a link F strikes the front face of the catchbar E, the latter is moved back in the slot a so that the shoulder e is disengaged from the solid angle a, when the pin D will drop by its own gravity into the bottom hole a made to receive it.
G is a link pivoted to the top of the pin D and to the arm h of the shaft H which may be arranged in bearings I on the front of the car and may be turned by a wheel J or by a crank-arm if preferred.
K is the head which raises an incominglink and has an arc-shaped shank 7c moved in and out of a corresponding hole a in the bottom of the drawhead. This movement is effected either forward or back by means of the endpivoted link L, sliding ratchet M and sectorpinion N, the latter being turned by a shaft 0 which has its bearing in the bottom of the drawhead and carries an end-wheel P.
Having thus described all that is necessary to afull understanding of my invention, what I desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In a car coupling, the combination with the pin D, lever C and catchbar E shouldered at e, of a drawhead having the curved incline a under the catchbar to guide it forward and bring the shoulder 6 under the part a of the drawhead, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In the drawhead of a car coupling, a pinion, a rack slide raised in front, an endpivoted link L, and a curved lifter K, combined and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADRIAN TESTARD.
