CABINET FOR TYPE-WRITERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.500,'185, dated June 27, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE C. BILLUPs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets for Type-Writers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in type writer cabinets, and has for its object to provide a cabinet which is designed to conceal and protect the type writing machine when not in use, and which will also expose the machine for use, and hold the same in a firm and effective manner, and which shall at the same time be simple and economic of construction and very expeditiously operated. And with these ends and objects in view my invention consists of the peculiarities in details of construction and operation hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.

In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may fully understand my invention I will proceed to de scribe the construction and manner of using the same, referring by letters of reference to the accompanying drawings, in wl1ich Figure 1 is a front elevation of one of my improved cabinets exposing and holding in position for usea type writing machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken at the line 00, 0c, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation with the back removed and exposing the counterbaL ancing weight; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view similar to that shown at Fig. 2, but with the machine lowered and the cover closed down to conceal and protect the machine.

Similar letters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.

A represents the sides, B the bottom and O the back of an ordinary cabinet.

D is a partition a short distance in front of the back 0, and with the latter composes or forms a close box E, which conceals the counterbalancin g weight F, hereinafter referred to.

G is the stationary portion of the top of the cabinet which is preferably strengthened and supported by suitable angle irons or brackets H.

I is a platform to which the type writing machine J is secured in any suitable manner. This platform I is pivoted near its forward edge to the sides A of the cabinet preferably by a rod or shaft which may be a continuous one and secured in place by a suitable head at one end and a thumb nutL at the other, or in any other desirable manner, so that the rear edge of the platform may drop down as shown in Fig. 4, and rest upon a shelf M, which forms not only a support, but also a shield against the entrance of dust.

To the rear edge of the platform I are secured preferably two ropes or chains N, the upper ends of which are secured to the under side of the sectional lid 0, O, which may be made in two or more parts, but preferably in two, and the lower ends to a weight or weights F, designed to counterbalance the weight of the platform I and machineJ mounted thereon. The ropes or chains N traverse or travel over pulleys Q, and the arrangement is such (as shown) that when the said lid is raised,it will lift the platform and machine into the position shown at Fig. 1, and when the lid is closed the platform and machine will descend to the position shown at Fig. 4. The rear por tion 0 of the sectional lid is hinged at a to the top of the cabinet and the front portion 0 is hinged at b to the rear portion 0, so that when the platform and. machine are raised into operative position the front portion 0 of the lid is folded or swung downwardly so that the lower or front edge of the portion 0 will bear or rest upon the upper edges of the sides A of the cabinet and check or brace the platform I and the machine against downward movement as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

If thought desirable the cabinet may be formed with a closed front, but I prefer to leave it open and to provide the support and shield M. It is also preferable that the parts 0 and O of the lid should be connected by hinges b 011 the under side, so as to form a rule-joint and thus give the leverage acquired by such connection for lifting the machine and platform.

Many changes may be made in the details of construction and configuration of the parts of my improved cabinet without departing from the spirit of my invention, the gist of which consists of the pivoted platform I, the sectional lid 0, 0, connected as described,of the connecting ropes N and weight or weights F, all adapted to co-operate as heretofore described. It will also be understood that while I consider the employment of the counterbalancing weight F as desirable, it may be dispensed with, and the whole weight of the machine and platform may be lifted directly by the action of the sectional lid 0, 0.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A type-writer cabinet having a machine platform I pivoted near its forward end and connected at its rear edge to one portion of a sectional lid 0, O, the same being made in sections, as shown in drawings, the rear section hinged to the cabinet and the front portion of the lid hinged to the rear portion and adapted when the lid is opened to operate as a check by contacting with the upper surface of the cabinet, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In atype-writer cabinet, the combination with a machine platform I, pivoted near its forward end and connected at its rear to the sectional lid by one or more ropes or chains, the said ropes secured at or near their centers to the rear portion of platform I, their upper ends being secured to the said sectional lid, and their lower ends to a counterbalancing Weight or weights, and the said weight or weights, hung as shown, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
