WATER-CLOSET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 498,866, dated June 6, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. UMPLEBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Closets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to siphon water-closets and the primary object is to provide a noiseless closet.

The invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts all as will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

Referring to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which similar letters of reference are used to denote similar parts, Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of awater-closet bowl and connections constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 isa plan of the same, partly in section; the section being taken on the line 11-11 of Fig. 1.

A, denotes the bowl which may be of ordinary or any preferred construction, having the usual flushing rim a, and siphon discharge pipe of ordinary construction; 13, denotes the jet supply pipe which maybe formed with an elbow or upturned extension I), having an enlarged upper end providing a collecting chamber 11 and within which is formed a horizontal partition I), having an outlet b opening into a discharge chamber 0, above said partition. The chamber 0 is separated from the flushing rim a, by a vertical partition c, which has an outlet 0', opening into the space behind the flushing rim. The capacity of the outlet 0 is considerably greater than that of the inlet to the discharge chamber O, to permit a free flow from said outlet. Therear upper wall b of the discharge chamber presents an inclined curved surface which is arranged at an angle to the inlet 1) for a purpose to be described.

The bowlA preferably communicates at the bottom through a trap a, with the short or up leg D of the siphon, the long leg E of which may connect with the soil pipe, while the pipe section B connects with a supply or flushing tank in a manner Well known in the art.

The entire structure, comprising the several parts shown in the drawings, may be formed in a single piece, or the bowl may be made separate and provided with pipes, elbows and connections joined thereto in any proper manner. The operation of the invention is as follows:The water entering the jet supply pipe B, will first collect Within the chamber 1), and

as the pressure increases a jet will be directed through the opening 12 against the inclined curved wall b as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1, and thence against the upright partition c, and falling upon the partition I), which forms the bottom of the discharge chamber, will flow therefrom freely and smoothly through the enlarged outlet 0, into the space in the flushing rim, and thence down the sides of the bowl,for the purpose of flushing and cleansing the same and subsequently filling the trap in the usual manner.- The supply to the discharge chamber is regulated by the opening 11 which is of less capacity than the outlet 0 so that no more water is permitted to entersaid chamber within a given time than may flow freely therefrom without making the gurgling and spurting noises which are incident to the use of closets of a similar type now in common use, and the closet is thus rendered noiseless in action.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. The combination with the bowl and its discharge ducts, of the discharge chamber formed adjacent to the flushing rim of the bowl with a partition separating the same from said rim and provided with an opening therein discharging into the rim, the collecting chamber adjacent to said discharge chamber and separated therefrom by a partition having an orifice therein for discharging a jet into the discharge chamber, and the supply pipe communicating with the collecting chamber, substantially as described. I
