UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST R. FLETCHER, OF ST. ALBANS, VERMONT.
BOX-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,780, dated May 23, 1893.
Application filed October 8, 1892.
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST R. FLETCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Albans, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Box-Lifter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hoisting tackle and consists in the manner of adjusting the chains to the size of the object to be lifted.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1,is an elevator of my improved tackle, as adjusted before application to any object, and Fig. 2, is a like view showing it as attached to a box or like object and drawn tightly as in the act of lifting.
Referring to the drawings by letters of reference, A, A, are the two legs of a pair of lifting tongs, pivoted at A, and connected at one of their extremities by the chains B, and ring B, while from the other extremities are suspended chains O, which terminate in the bent arms D, by which the tackle is secured to the load.
To the legs of the tongs or the connecting link of the chains 0, I secure a link which is bentto the form ofaJews-harp tackle, through which the chains 0, are passed, the object of which is to render the chains readily adjustable to suit the bulk of the load to be raised, as it will be seen by raising the chains 0, into the larger opening in the link 0', they can be Serial No. 448,269. (No model.)
readily drawn back and forth until the required length is left between the links C, and the lifting arms D. When properly adjusted thelin ks of chains 0, at the time Within the links 0, are turned so that they can be pressed between the parallel members of the shackle links, when the fellow links in chain 0, upon each side, will stand at right angles to the shackled link and prevent its slipping in any direction.
An examination of Fig. 2, will show clearly the method of bindinga load when itis being raised.
My invention is especially designed for raising boxes containing blocks of granite and other heavy substances, but may be used for any like purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v y The pivoted levers and means for connecting them with a suitable hoisting apparatus, in connection with lifting arms, shackle links, and chains for connecting the levers and arms, said chains being adapted to adjustment in the shackle links, in the manner described and for the purpose specified.
St. Albans, Vermont, September 28, 1892.
ERNEST R. FLETCHER.
