TELESCOPING-SATCHEL HARNESS.

SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,736, dated May 16, 1893.

Be it known that I, HENRY VAN ALTENA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telescoping-Satchel Harness; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is to provide a strong and serviceable adjustable harness or bag fastening for telescopic satchels primarily and also for all similarly constructed articles and combined therewith in such a manner as to co-operate with catches or engaging devices with which the satchel, &c., is provided in order to attain the desired end and it consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts substantially as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings in which is illustrated the invention Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a telescopic satchel provided with a harness constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the bottom of the satchel, and Fig. 3 is a view in detail.

Like letters of reference wherever they occur indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Referring again to the drawings A represents the top portion or cover, and A the lower main portion of a satchel,the two parts, cover and body, being adapted to become engaged with each other in order that they may be distended or closed together in a telescopic manner at will, thus aifording the satchel a greater or less carrying capacity as may be desired by the user thereof.

The harness or fastening device ordinarily used to secure the satchel sections together and which is shown in its holding position in Fig. 1, consists of a strap B securedin a rigid or movable relation to the bottom of the satchel along one side, as the left hand, edge of the same, in any approved manner as in the present instance by the loops D and thence passed diagonally across the sides of the same, the

two ends of the harness 13 terminating, near the opposite side edge of the top of the cover A in a strap B provided with a series of engaging devices, as the perforations b, any of which serve upon occasion to engage with the catch, knob or equivalent holding device 0, placed at a convenient point on the adjacent side of the upper section or cover of the satchel. Another portion of the harness B attached to the right hand edge of the bottom of the body of the satchel is passed diagonally across the sides and is secured by the strap B passing over the left hand top edge of the cover A, to the catch 0, placed at that side of the said cover A. A hook b placed at the extremity of each of the straps l3 and B may be fastened in one of the perforations b as shown in Fig. 3, in order to shorten the straps and to present a more seemly appearance when the two sections of the satchel are closed together.

In practical operation the harness 13, B is passed in the manner hereinbefore set forth over each end of the cover of the telescopic satchel, &c., which when packed is more or less distended according to circumstances, and the straps 13 B are adjusted in connection with the catch or holding devices so as to securely keep the parts together, the sides of the satchel being reinforced by the crossed straps of the harness.

In order to release the sections of the satchel the catches C and straps B B are disengaged whereupon by use of the handle a secured to the cover and strap a fastened to the bottom of the body, the two parts maybe withdrawn and detached from each other. It is obvious that the harness may be varied in construction from that shown, as for example it may be permanently secured to the cover and engaged when desired with the body, my invention consisting in providing a strong and simple adjustable harness whereby the two sections of a telescopic satchel, &c., may be secured together at any desired point of distention.

As it is evident that many slight changes in construction and relative arrangement of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but that I reserve the right to make such changes.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a telescope satchel the sides of the cover of which are provided with catches or holding devices, of a double harness secured to the bottom of the body of the satchel along the shorter side edges thereof, and passed diagonally across the longer sides of the closed satchel, each end of the harness being provided with series of perforations adapted to adj ustably engage the catches on opposite sides of the cover, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a telescopic satchel the cover of which is provided with catches at each end, of a harness consisting of two parts one'attached to each end of the bottom of the body of the satchel, and each adapted to embrace the body and cover when placed together and be secured to the catch in the opposite end of the cover, substantially as described,

3. The combination with a telescopic satchel provided with catches at each end, of a doupresence of two witnesses.
