AUTOMATIC STOKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 497,073, dated May 9, 1893.

To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, JOHN H. JOHNS, of the National Military Home, county of Leavenworth, and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Stokers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in automatic stckers and grate agitating devices; and my invention consists in certain features of novelty hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I, represents a front elevation of a furnace with my improved device attached thereto. Fig. II, is a longitudinal, vertical section of the same. Fig. III, is a horizontal section of a portion showing the doors. Fig. IV, is a vertical section of the hopper showing the partition between the doors in connection therewith. Fig. V, is a horizontal section of the stoker, showing a portion of the gearing for operating the same. Fig. V1, is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the means for adjusting the feeding device. Fig. VII, is a detail horizontal longitudinal section showing the yoke for adjusting the wrist pin which operates the feeding device. Fig. VIII, is an enlarged detail perspective of the gear, adjustable yoke block and wrist pin attached thereto for operating the feeding device. Fig. IX, is a perspective of a slotted disk which is secured to the hub in which the sliding block operates.
Referring to the drawings 1, represents the front of a furnace, 2, a boiler, and 3, a grate located in the furnace.
4, represents a hopper secured to the front of the furnace 1, as shown at 5, said hopper having an opening 6, at its top into which fuel may be shoveled or otherwise placed, and an opening 6 at the bottom through which the fuel is discharged into the doors.
7, represents box doors hinged to the front of the furnace as shown at 8, said doors being of box shape, having an interior chamber 9, connected by the botton opening of 6 of the hopper 4 with the hopper, whereby the fuel may be discharged from the hopper into said chamber 9, on its way to the furnace.
10, represents the bottoms of the doors, and 11 an opening leading from the doors or chamber 9', within the same into the interior of the furnace, there being an opening in the front Wall of the furnace registering with the door 7, so as to admit of the passage of fuel. The front portion of the hopper is inclined, as shown at 12, in order to assist in feeding the fuel into the chambers of thedoors 7.
13, represents a hub journaled at 14, to a bracket '15, which in turn is secured to the door 7, as shown at 16. The hub 13, is provided with a gear 17, which meshes with a gear 18, on a shaft 19, said shaft 19, being driven by a pulley 20. The hub 13, is provided with a centrally located horizontal slot 21, in which slides a yoke 22, said yoke being moved laterally by means of a screw 23, secured to one end of said yoke; said screw having a bearing in one end of the hub 13, as shown at 24, in order to move the yoke 22, in said hub 13, 25, representing a hand wheel for rotating said screw. The hub 13 is also provided with a vertical slot 26, in which slides a block 27, bearing a wrist pin 28, said block 27, being provided with angle slots 29, in which lugs 30, on the yoke 22 operate; the eifect being that as the yoke 22, is moved laterally in the hub 13, the lugs-30, on the yoke traveling in the angle slots 29, will cause block 27 and the Wrist pin 28, to move in the vertical slot 26, of the hub 13, moving the wrist pin 28, to or from the center of the hub 13, as may be desired, in order to feed a greater or less amount of fuel, as will be described farther on.
31, represents a slotted disk which may be secured to the end of the hub 13, over the yoke 22, said disk having a slot 32, to permit of the free operation of the wrist pin 28. The disk 31, is recessed on its inner side, as shown at 33, to permit of the proper movement outwardly of the yoke 22. i
34, represents an arm journaled to the wrist pin 28, at one of its ends, said arm being held in place by means of a washer 35, and a nut 36. The opposite end of the arm 34, is pivoted, as shown at 37, to one end of a rocking lever 38, the lever 38, being pivoted near its center as shown at 39, to a bracket 40, said bracket being cast on the door 7.
41, represents an arm pivoted, as shown at 42, to the opposite end of the rocking lever 38, said arm 41, being pivoted at its opposite end to a lug 43, said lug being secured to a pushing or feeding plate 44, situated within the chamber 9 of the door 7. Thus by the operation of the gearing described the plate 44, is caused to move back and forth, (see dotted lines, Fig. 11,) forcing the fuel through the opening 11, into the interior of the furnace; and by the adjustable wrist pin 28, the travel of the plate 44, is regulated. If desired the wrist pin 28, may be moved to the center of the hub 13, in which condition the plate 44, may remain stationary.
In order to prevent the fuel from passing to the rear of the plate 44, in the chamber 9, I curve the upper end of the plate 44, backward, as shown at'45, and provide an apron 46, which is hinged, as shown at 47, to a lug 48, which is secured to the door 7; thus allowing the apron to swing as the plate 44, is moved to and fro. See dotted lines, Fig. II.
49, represents a wedge shaped partition against which the doors 7, close, said partition being bolted to the front of the furnace, as shown at 50. The inner ends of the doors 7, are provided with angling faces 51, which come in contact with the wedge shaped partition 49, when the doors are closed, thus forming a tight contact with the same. The partition 49, is provided with angling slots 52,in which latches 53 engage, when the doors are closed, said angle slots causing the doors to be forced into tight contact with the partition 49, the latches 53, being operated by the hand pieces 54.
When the doors 7, are swung open, see Fig. III, the gear 17, is disconnected from the gear 18, thus stopping the operation of the feeding plate 44; and if desired, when the doors are so opened fuel may be fed by hand to the furnace; it being obvious that when the doors are opened no more fuel is fed to the furnace, as all the fuel in the hopper above the doors will be discharged onto the ground in front of the furnace. The gear 18, on the shaftlt), also meshes with a gear 55, on a hub 56, said hub being journaled in a bracket 57, secured to the front of the furnace, as shown at 58. The hub 56, is provided with a sliding block 59, a wrist pin 60, a yoke for operating said block, constructed the same as the yoke 22, and block 27, and having a screw 61 for operating the same.
62, represents a link pivoted at one of its ends to the wrist pin 60, and held thereon by means of a washer 63, and a nut 64. The link 62, extends through an opening 65, in the front wall of the furnace, and has its opposite ends pivoted, as shown at 66, to an angle bar '67, on which rests a series of inclined grates 68. As the gear 55 is rotated the wrist pin 60, will cause the link 62, to move back and forth, thus rocking the angle bar 67, and thereby agitating the grates 68.
I have shown a form of grates on which I have made a previous application; but do not confine myself to any specific grate, as the operating device may be connected with various styles of movable grates.
It will be observed that by the construction described the wrist pin 60, is adjustable in the same manner as "the wrist pin 28, in order to regulate the amount of agitation given to the grate bars.
69, represents doors connecting with the ash pit 70.
The outer end of the hub 56, is also supplied with a slotted disk 71, constructed in the same manner as the disk 31.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with a furnace of a hopper, a hollow door, having connection therewith; a movable plate within said door, and a hinged apron extending over the upper end of said plate; substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a furnace of a hopper, a hollow door, a movable curved plate operating within said door, and an apron having its lower end extending over the upper end of said plate, said apron being hinged to a suitable supporting device; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with a furnace, of a receptacle for holding fuel; a reciprocating plate therein; a hub having suitable gear thereon; attached to. said receptacle an adjustable wrist pin in connection with said hub, and means for connecting said wrist pin with said plate in order to feed fuel to the furnace; substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a furnace of a receptacle for holding fuel; a movable plate therein; a hub having a gear thereon; ablock working within said hub; a wrist pin on said block; means for moving said wrist pin to and from the center of said block, and means for connecting said wrist pin with the plate within the fuel-holding receptacle; substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination witha furnace of a fuel holding receptacle; a power shaft; means for rotating said shaft; a gear on said shaft; a hub havinga gear which meshes with the gear on the shaft; a sliding block bearing a wrist pin working in said hub; a yoke within said hub, capable of being moved at right angles with the sliding block; lugs on said yoke, working in angle slots in said block, and a screw for moving said yoke; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination with a furnace of'a fuel holding receptacle; a plate within said receptacle; means for connecting said plate with a wrist pin by which it is operated, said wrist pin being secured to a sliding block working in a groove in a suitable hub; a yoke having lugs working in the angle slots, in said sliding block; means for moving said yoke in said hub; and a slotted disk fitting over the ends of said yoke and said wrist pin; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The combination with a furnace of a shaft having a gear thereon; a hub having a gear meshing with the gear on said shaft an adjustable wrist pin, secured to said hub; a link connected at one of its ends with said wrist pin 5 an angle bar for operating one end of a series of grates located within the furnace, and to which the opposite end of said link is pivoted; substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
8. The combination with a furnace of a power shaft; a gear thereon; a hub 56, having a gear 55; a sliding block 59, Working in said hub; a wrist pin secured to said sliding block; a yoke sliding in said hub, connected with angle slots in said block for adjusting said wrist pin, and a screw in connection with said sliding block and hub for adjusting the sliding block; substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
9. The combination with a furnace of suitable doors having chambers therein for holding fuel, and a wedge shaped partition between said doors against which the doors close; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
10. The combination with a furnace of suitable doors having chambers therein for bolding fuel; a wedge shaped partition against which said doors close and angle slots in said partition and catches secured to said doors engaging in said angle slots, for forming a' close contact between the doors and partition; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
