D.G.H0BBY. GAGE RUNNER ATTAGHMENT.
No. 496,566. Pafizeltm May 2', 1893.
un! 'I In Il I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DELZON G. HOBBY, OF ALBION, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK D. HAMLIN, OF MEDINA, NEW YORK.
GAGE-RUNNER ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,566, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed December 10,1892. Serial No. 454.776. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, DELZON G. HOBBY, a
A citizen of the United States, residing at Albion, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Gage-RunnerAttachment for Walkin g-Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plow attachments; and it has for its object to provide an improved gage runner attachment for walking plows which shall provide means for conveniently raising and lowering the wheel of the attachment, so that the depth at which the plow is to be run can be easily governed by the operator without stopping the plow.
To this end the invention primarily contemplates certain improvements in attachments of this character.
With these and other objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the in- `vention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figure l is a side elevation of a plow having a gage runner attachment as contemplated by the present invention. Fig. 2'is a horizontal sectional view through the attachment on the beam. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail in perspective of the attachment detached from the plow.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents an ordinary plow beam carrying the usual plow B, and having at the rear thereof the ordinary handles O. The plow beam A, is provided in one side thereof near the clevis end with the side notch or recess D, over which is clamped the attachment plate E. The attachment plate E, is provided on the inner side thereof with the offstanding securing rib F, which snugly fits in the side notch or recess in the beam to hold the plate steady, and said plate i's secured to the beam on the single bolt G. The said attachment plate E, is provided upon the outer face thereof with the opposite inturned grooved guide tongues H, and is extended integrally l at one end as at I, and carries on such end below its center the pivot pin or stud bolt J the function of which will be shown.
The inturned grooved guide tongues H, of the attachment plate, overlap the side edges of the vertically adjustable sliding wheel standard K. The sliding wheel standard K, which is guided in its vertical adjustment in the grooves of the guide tongues, is provided with a central longitudinally disposed strengthening rib 7e, and carries upon the extreme lower end thereof the gage wheel L, which is adapted to travel over the ground to gage the depth at which the plow is to run. An operating bellcrank lever M, is pivoted at its angle on the pivot bolt J, of said attachment plate and is provided at the extremity of one arm thereof with the slot mf, which loosely engages the pin N, projecting from about the center of the sliding wheel standard. The said bell crank lever M, is provided with an angle brace fn, connecting the two arms thereof and has connected to the extremity of the free' arm thereof the operating rod O, which is connected to one end of the controlling lever P. The lever P, is pivoted to one of the plow handles and carries a spring actuated pawl p adapted to engage the notched segment Q, secured to the plow handle alongsideof the lever P. By manipulating the lever P, the wheel standard can be raised and lowered at the option of the operator to control the depth of the plow.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an attachment for plows, the combination with the plow beam having a side notch or recess at one end; of an attachment plate having at one sido an off-standing securing rib F, adapted to snugly iit in the side notch or recess in the beam, opposite inturned' grooved guide tongues, and an integral end extension I, havinga pivot pin or stud bolt, at
single bolt passing through the attachment plate and said beam lto hold the former in position, a vertically adjustable wheel standard adapted to slide on the attachment plate between the grooved guide tongues thereof, said wheel standard carrying a gage wheel or run- 11er at its loWer end and provided with an in- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as termediate outwardly projecting pin, abraeed my own I have hereto affixed my signature in 1o bell crank lever pivoted at its angle on said the presence of two Witnesses.
pvot pin or bolt and havin" a slot in one f Y 5 arm adapted to loosely engagae the pin of the DELON G HOLBY' wheel standard, and controlling devices oon- Witnesses: neeted to the other arm of the braced bell JOHN WV. CARD,
crank, substantially as set forth. CHARLES ALLEN.
