JOURNAL-BEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,482, dated May 2, 1893.

To a ljwhom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN N. KAILOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Columbus, in the county of Bartholomew andState of Indiana, have invented a new and useful J ournal-Bearing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved journal-bearing, which is designed more particuxo larly for the journals of the hulling and thrashing-cylinders of clover-hulling-machines.
The object of my improvement is, to provide means for adjusting the bearing laterally, so as to prevent end-wise motion of the shaft which carries the hulling cylinder, and at the same time provide for the automatic alignment of the journal-box.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my 2o invention.
Figure 1 represents a plan, showing the shaft in position in the bearing. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section of the bearing. Fig. 3 represents a transverse sec- 2 5 tion at -a- Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a plan of the bed-plate of the bearing in position, the journal-box having been removed. Fig. 5 represents a plan of the under side of the journal-box.
In the drawings, A, indicates a casting forming the bed-plate of the bearing. Said bed-plate is provided on its upper surface, with a circular recess, B, adapted to receive the flanges of the journal-box. Projecting 5 from the opposite ends of the bed-plate is a pair of lugs, C, and D. Lug O is perforated centrally to receive a pivot-bolt, E, and lug D is provided with a slot, F, adapted to receive the clamping-bolt, G. Bed-plate A is mounted in a recess, 1-1, out in the upper face of a supporting timber I, lug O resting upon the upper surface of the timber and being secured thereto by the pivot-bolt E so as to swing laterally thereon. The opposite end of the bed-plate terminating in lug D, rests upon a casting, J, which is secured to the timber I by means of the bolt, K, and is provided with an .upwardly projecting lug, L, in which is mounted a set-screw, M; the arrange- 5o ment being such that the end of the set-screw Serial No. 459,424. rests against the edge of lug D. The journal-box consists of a lower part, N, and an upper part, 0, adapted to receive the shaft, P, between them, and secured together by bolts, R, R. The flanges of thejournal-box are circular in outline and are adapted to fit easily into the circular recess B of the bedplate. The under side of the journal-box is provided, on opposite sides of the center, with a pair of slightly raised bosses, S, S, each havto inga rounded surface adapted to rest upon the flat portion of the bottom of recess B, the arrangement being such, that, when the j ournal-box is in position on the bed-plate, it is free to turn on the bed-plate in a horizontal plane and to rock thereon in a vertical plane. The under side of the box is also provided with a hollow'boss, T, in which is mounted, concentric with the circular flange, a bolt, U, which projects through the under side of the timber, the boss extending through a central aperture V, formed in the bed-plate.
The operation of my device is as follows:- The journal of the shaft being mounted in the journal-box, the box being free to turn horizontally and to rock vertically upon the bed-plate, adjusts itself to the alignment of the shaft. The bed-plate is now adjusted, being swung upon the pivot-bolt E, by means of the set-screw M, until the end of the jour- 8o nal-box rests against the hub of the cylinder head, W, or other shoulder with which the shaft may be provided. The free end of the bed-plate is then secured in position by tightening the clamping-bolt G. By this construc- 8 5 tion a journal-box is provided by means of which all end-wise movement of the shaft and the cylinder which it carries may be prevented, and all wear between the shoulder on the shaft and the end of the journal-box may be taken up, the journal-box maintaining its alignment at all times.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a journal-bearing, the combination of the supporting timber, the bed-plate provided with a central circular recess and pivoted at one end to the supporting timber so as to swing laterally thereon, the clamping-bolt passing through the free end of the bed-plate and the timber, the journal-box adapted to :00
receive a shaft and having a circular flange adapted to fit and to turn in the circular recess in the bed-plate, and the retaining bolt secured in the under side of the journal-box and projecting through the timber, whereby the journal-box may be adjusted longitudinally upon the shaft and maintain its horizontal alignment therewith as set forth.
2. In a journal-bearing, the combination of the supporting timber, the bed-plate provided with a central circular recess, and pivoted at one end to the supporting timber so as to swing laterally thereon, the clamping-bolt passing through the free end of the bed-plate and of the timber, the journal-box adapted to receive ashaft and having a circular flange JOHN N.
