Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NEWSPAPER-FILE.
Specication forming part of Let-ters Patent No. 49.620, dated August 29, i865.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JACOB FRioK, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Newspaper-Edles, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ofreferencc marked thereon.
My invention consists in certain improvements, tully described hereinafter, whereby the wooden strips between which the newspapers are placed may readily adjust themselves to the papers and securely contine them in their position without tearing or cutting the same.
In order to enable others to make and use my invention, l will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this specification, Figure l. is a side view of my improved newspapertile; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section; Fig. 3, a plan view, and Fig. 4 a section on the line l 2, Fig. 1.
Similar letters referto similar parts throughout the several views.
A and B are two wooden strips, the former ot which is the shorter, and has in its lower edge a recess adapted to a projection on the upper edge ot' the strip B, the interior of the recess in the strip A, as well as the surface of the projection ot the strip B, being covered with cloth or rubber, for a purpose described hereinafter.
Nearoncend ofthe strip B is a recess through which passes a metal plate, C, and near the other end is a recess through which passes a plate, C', and to the lower end of each plate is riveted a curved spring, a, the ends of which bear against the under sideof the strip B, for a purpose described hereinafter.
In both the plates G and G are a series ot' openings, w, through one ot' which, in the plate C, passes a pin, c, by means of which the end ofthe strip A isjointed to the said plate, and into a corresponding opening in the plate C projects the end of a hook, t, which is hung to the upper edge of the strip A.
From the upper edge ot' the strip B, and
through openings in the strip A, project the usual retaining-pins, l), and to the center of the strip A is attached a ring, d, by means of which the file may be hung in its place.
Vhen a paper has to be secured in the tile the end of the strip A adjacent to the plate C is raised, the paper is placed on the adjustingpins b in the usual manner, and the strip A is depressed to its former position and fastened by the hook i, the paper being thus firmly secured between the two strips.
The wooden strips generally employed in making newspaper-tiles are liable to warp, and their edges are thus so far separated that the paper slips between them and is torn away at the point where the pins b pass through the same. In the present instance I have overcome this difficulty by recessing the edge of one strip and forming a projection in the edge of the other, the paper being still more tirmly secured by covering the edges of the strips with cloth or rubber. As the number ot' papers on the tile increases the strips A and B are separated. the springs ct permitting the strips to adjust themselves to the position required, aud at the sanne time retaining them rmly in contact with the paper. When the number of papers increases to such an extent as to straighten the springs ct, the pin c and the hook i may beinserted in one ofthe openingszin in the plates U and G above that in which they were previously placed.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The strips A and B, combined with the plates C and C' and with the springs a, or their equivalent, substantially as and for the purpose specitied.
2. rI he plates A and B, one having a projection on its edge and the other a recess in the edge adjacent to the said projection, for the purpose specified.
3. The strips A and B, having strips of cloth, rubber, or other elastic material secured to their inner edges, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, JACOB FRICK. Vitnesses CHARLES E. Fos'rER, G. B. PRICE.
