lga mace I w Gnome/1 s UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN LEWIS, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
BASKET GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,418, dated April 11, 1893. Application filed July 23, 1892. Serial No.440,980. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN LEwIs, of Nashville, county of Davidson, and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Basket Grates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that form of grate shown in my patent, No. 463,061, dated November 10, 1891, and consists in certain improved constructions and arrangements, as will hereinafter fully appear in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved grate. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section; and Fig.
' 4 is a horizontal section taken just above the bottom of the grate.
Referring to the figures on the drawings, 1 indicates the back casting, which is provided with side chambers 2, extending the entire length of the casting.
3 indicates inside chambers extending from the upper part of the casting nearly to the bottom of the grate.
4 indicates the front piece of the grate, consisting of a casting provided with'vertica]. posts 5, and horizontal cross-pieces 6.
7 indicates connecting pieces uniting the back-piece to the front piece.
8 indicates brackets near the lower end part of the back-piece and front-piece, adapted to support the bottom casting 9.
10 indicates pipes connecting the bottom part with the lower ends of the side chambers of the back-piece.
The interior of the castings, forming the back-piece, the front piece, and the bottom piece, are made hollow for the reception of water. Itis allowed to circulate freely through the entire structure by means of the connecting pipes 10, above referred to.
13 indicates the water supply-pipe communicating with the interior of the grate in its lower part, preferably the side bottom piece, as illustrated.
14 indicates service pipes, preferably communicating with the interior of the back-piece near its top, as illustrated.
By my invention I produce a grate of the kind described, which is economical to manufacture, and is economical in practice; and which presents an ornamental appearance in use.
What I claim is---v The combination in a grate, of a vertical, hollow back section having brackets at its lower inner corners, a hollow bottom section resting upon said brackets, a hollow vertical front section having brackets at its lower inner corners, upon which the front end of the bottom section rests, pipes connecting the back and front sections and the back and bottom sections, respectively, an induction pipe leading into the bottom section, and an eduction pipe leading from the upper part of the back section, substantially as specified.
-In testimony of all which I have hereunto subscribed my name.
JOHN LEWIS. Witnesses:
PAUL NEWELL, JOHN E. COLVIN.
