To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. STONE, of Knightsville, in the countyof Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladder- Hooks; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention has reference to improvements in hooks for extension-ladders in which a narrow ladder forms an extension for a ladder of greater width, and is adapted to travel over the rounds of such wider ladder.

The object of the invention is to produce an economical form of extension-ladder hook which shall be strong and durable, operate automatically, and in which the pivoted-portions of the hook and pawl, and the spring for operating the same, will be protected from the weather.

The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the casing, and the combination therewith of the spring-operated thrust-hook and the pawl for depressing the same, together with such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claim.

Figure 1 represents a view of the casecover. Fig. 2 represents a view of the casing with the cover removed to show the movable parts pivoted in the case and operated by a spring.

Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.

In carrying my invention into practice I form a casing 5 and a cover 6, the casing has the raised sides 7 and S and the ends 9 and 10, the side 8 being partially cut away to allow the pawl and latch-bolt to extend beyond the casing. The casing has also the perforated-pivots 11 and 12, and the stud 14: around which the spring 15 is coiled, the ends of this spring being bent up to bear against the sides of the pawl 16, pivoted on the tubular-pivot 11, and the latch-bolt 17 pivoted on that marked 12, the bent end of this spring bearing against the rear edge of the latch-bolt and tending to continually thrust the same outward. The latch-bolt 1.7 extends downward, when secured in position on a ladder, and at its lower end has a jaw 18 which is adapted to engage the round of a ladder. The cover 6 has perforations corresponding in location with the locations of the pivots, and when the cover is in place these pivots extend through the perforations and are expanded therein to secure the cover to the case.

When in use, the caseis preferably secured to the extension-ladder by screws passing through the tubular-pivots. As the extension-ladder moves down over the rounds of the base-ladder, the latch-bolt is forced into the case by the pawl 16, but, if after the end of the pawl has passed a round the downward movement of the extension-ladder is arrested, the pawl will drop to the position shown in the drawings and the'latch-bolt'will spring out to engage the round of the ladder.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I The combination with the case 5 having the sides 7 and 8, ends 9 andlO, the tubular-pivots 11 and 12 and stud 14, and the spring 15 secured around the stud, and having bent ends bearing respectively against the rear surfaces of the pawl and latch-bolt,of the pawl 16 pivoted on the pivot 11, the thrust latch-bolt 17 having the jaw 18 and pivoted on the pivot 12, and the cover 6 secured to the casing, as and for the purpose described.
