L. L. DENNICK.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LYMAN L. DENNICK, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
INDEX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,466, dated March 28, 1893.
Application filed May 25, 1892.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN L. DENNICK, of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indices for Index-Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention contemplates certain new and highly useful improvements in indices, and has for its object the production of a new and improved highly efficient index for indexbooks, whereby a ready reference and classification of names is obtained and the finding or location of the same in the index book is greatly simplified and facilitated.
The invention consists of an index sheet or chart to be used in connection with index books, said sheet or chart having combinations, of names properly classified, uncommon names by means of abbreviations; common names in full, very common names being further divided by initials (of Christian name), all having the number of the page of the index-book where all such names are to be found adjacent thereto, substantially as' hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claim. v
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1 is a view of a portion of my index sheet or chart for index books. Fig. 2 is a View of a page of such latter.
In carrying out my invention I provide an index sheet or chart A, which is pasted on the inside of coverand first y page of the indexbook in connection with which my index sheet is employed. This index-sheet A, is divided off into separate sections c, each headed by a different letter of the alphabet in proper order. Each of these sections has a full name or a portion thereof indicated thereon, and on a line therewith is the number of the page of the index on which the name is to be found. For instance, uncommon names, such as Baer and Backus can be included on the same page of the index book and will be found by indexsheet under the abbreviation Ba a-h.
The application and use of my improved index-sheet is shownin Fig. 2, which is an illustration of page 1S of the index book. Reference is made to this page in the index under serai' No. 434,271. (no modem the abbreviation Bar n-q-lS. On this page of index book are to be found all names beginning with the first three letters mentioned, the fourth letter of which is between the letters Fa and q. In common names such as Brown or Smith the full name is given on the index sheet and the classilication further had according to the initials, as, for instance, those whose initials are from A to F will be found on one page of the index-book, those from G to R on an-V other and those from S to Z on still another page.
My improved index is specially designed for use in connection with county-records of deeds, mortgages and the like, vand also for abstract companies, tax indices and records of from twenty to forty thousand names, more or less, to which daily additions are made.
It is a far cheaper, simpler and more durable method of providing an extensive index book, of any of the natures indicated, with an index sheet or chart of this character than it is to index or print on protruding portions of different pages. rlhe names are conveniently classified and it is Very easy to find the desired page of the indexed name by the abbreviated form of index sheet.
The advantages of my invention are apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains, and it will be specially observed that by means thereof a highly convenient and inexpensive index book is obtained.
I claim as/my invention- An index book having an index sheet or sheets composed of a series of columns or sections with dierent alphabetical headings, each column or section having letters and numerals thereon indicating a name or portion thereof and page of index book in which such name is to be found, each column or section containing only such names the initial letters of which correspond to its alphabetical heading, said numerals and letters being arranged in the same column or section, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
