G. KEHR.
FOLDING GHAIR.
(No Medei.)
Patented Feb. 7, l893r lin'rrnn S'rsrss e'rnnr @rrics,
CYRUS KEHR, OF LAKESIDE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE NORTH W'ESTERN FIRE MATTRESS COMPANY, OF KEN-OSHA, \VISOONSIN.
FOLDING CHAIR.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 491,215, dated February 7, 1893.
Application filed January 11, 1892. fierial No. 417,743. (No model-l To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CYRUS KERR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakeside, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Folding Chairs; and I do hereby declsre the following to he a. foil, clear, and exnot description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it apxo pertains to make and use the same, reference hein g had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form e part of this specification.
In an application executed and filed by me January 11, 1892, Serial No. 417,747, I claim broadly a folding chair having in combination side rails, legs, seat, hinged to said legs at its frond-and a link connection joining the rear of the seat with the side mils. But in 2a said applicetioinno specific claim is made for such 9. link connection consisting of distinct bars located one at each side of the chairand connecting the rear of the seat with a portion of the side rails above the seat.
25 In the accompanying drawings-Figure l is a front elevation of a chair embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same when folded. Fig 3 is a. side elevation of the some unfolded. Figs. 4:, 5, and 6 3a are details of a modification.
A, A, are side rails separated from each other a little more than the widih of the sect of the chair.
B is the seat.
C, O, are legs supporting the front of the seat. Sold legs are preferably located between the side rails, A, A, and pivoted on a rung extending through said legs and said side- 'lilllS. At their lower end said legs may be 40 joined to each other by a rung, C, or otherwise. The upper ends of the side rails may or In y not be joined to each other by a bar, At their upper ends, said legs, 0, G, are hinged to the front of the seat, B. I
3 D is the heel: of the chair. This is located above the seat, B,eud between the side rails, A, A, and hinged to the letter at l), which hinge is preferably located in the front hall of the side rails, A, A, so that the upper end of the hack shall occupy the front half of the speceheiween the side rails, A, r
The lower end of the back maybe free, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. From each rear corner of the seat, B, a, link, E, extends upward and is hinged at its upper end to the adjacent side 5 5 rail, A, at E. At the lower end the junction between said link and the seat is formed by a. hinge E The elevation of the hinge E is such as to allow the link, E, to turn rearward and upward upon said hinge and lie lengthwise between the side rails, A, A, when the seat, B, and the upper ends of the legs, 0, C, have moved rearward and lie lengthwise between the side mils, A, A, as shown in Fig. 2. The back, I), may be retained at its lower end against; rearward movement by stops, 6, upon the links, E, or otherwise. Or the back maybe omitted altogether; or it may be made stetioneryin the front portion of the space between the side rails, A, A. yo
hen the chair has been folded as shown in Fig. 2, the hinge formed on the rung A, the hinge joining the legs, C, G, and sent, B, the hinge joining the seat, 13, and links,E, E, are substantially in line, and the meeting 7 5 ends of the legs, C, C, and the seat, 33, maybe moved either forward or backward. The forward movement is the proper one and the movement in the opposite direction is prevented bys stop, A applied to one or both of 8c the side rails, A, A, and made to extend into the way of the legs, 0, C, or the seat, 13.
To prevent the upper end of the legs, C, 0, and the seat, 13, from moving forward and downward, a, stop, 13 of anysuiteole form and supported by the see-t, B, or links, E, may he fitted to engage the side rails, A, A, from the rear.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, the edges of the hack adjacent to the hinge E are provided with a slot, (Z, in the faces toward the side rails, A, A, and the links, E, are extended upward and into line with the back when the latter is at its reermost limit of movement. At such upper end, 9 5 said link supports a stud, e, which extends loosely into said slob, d. When the portion of the link below the hinge E is turned rearward, the portion of said link above said hinge will move forward and carry the stud 6' forward, end said stud carries the lower portion of said back forward until said extension is in a line at right angles to the length of the side rails, A, A. Thereafter, on carrying the lower end of the link, E, upward, the stud, 6, will approach the plane of the side rails, A,A, and move the lower portion of the back, D, rearward until it rests in the front portion of the space between the side rails, A,A. Thus the back is automatically placed into its two positions.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the side rails, A, A, legs, 0, O, hinged to said side rails, seat, 13, hinged by its front end to the front ends of said legs, links, E, hinged by their lower ends to the rear of said seat and by their upper ends to the side rails, A, A, and a stop for limiting the forward movement of said seat and the legs, 0, O, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the side rails, A, A, legs, C, O, hinged to said side rails, seat, B, hinged by its front end to the front ends of said legs, links, E, hinged by their lower ends to the rear of said seat and by their upper ends to the side rails, A, A, and a stop for limiting the forward movement of said sea-t and the legs, C, C, and a stop for limiting the rearward movement of said seat and legs, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the side rails, A, A, legs, 0, O, hinged to said side rails, seat, B, hinged by its front end to the front ends of said legs, links, E, hinged by their lower ends to the rear of said seat and by their upper ends to the side rails, A, A, and a stop for limiting the forward movement of said seat and the legs, C, O, and a back located between the side rails, A, A, substantially as shown and described.
4:. The combination of the side rails, A, A, legs, 0, O, hinged to said side rails, seat, 13, hinged by its front end to the front ends of said legs, links, E, hinged by their lower ends to the rear of said seat and by their upper ends to the side rails, A, A, a stop for limiting the forward movement of said seat and the legs, 0, C, and a stop for limiting the rearward movement of said seat and legs, and a back located between the side rails, A, A, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination of the side rails, A, A, legs, (J, C, hinged to said side rails, seat, B, hinged by its front end to the front ends of said legs, links, E, hinged by theirlower ends to the rear of said seat and by their upper ends to the side rails, A, A, astop for limiting the forward movement of said seat and the legs, 0, O, and a hinged back located between said side rails, A, A, substantially as shown and described.
6. The combination of the side rails, A, A, legs, 0, O, hinged to said side rails, seat, B, hinged by its front end to the front ends of said legs, links, E, hinged by their lo-werends to the rear of said seat and by their upper ends to the side rails, A, A, a stop for limiting the forward movement of said seat and the legs, 0, O, a stop for limiting the rearward movement of said seat and legs, and a hinged back located between said side rails, A, A, substantially as shown and described.
7. The combination of the side rails, A, A, legs, 0, O, hinged to said side rails, seat, 13, hinged by its upper end to the upper ends of the legs, 0, 0, links, E, E, hinged by their lower ends to the rear of saidseat, and hinged above said seat to the side rails, A, A, and extending above said last-mentioned hinge and having laterally-directed studs, 6', a back hinged by its upper end to the side rails, A, A, and having a slot, cl, into which the studs 6 ext-end, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 5th day of January, in the year 1892.
CYRUS KEHR.
