UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES BALL AND JOHN PARKER FORD, OF ZANESVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVED PAINT COMPOSITION.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,066. dated August 1, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES BALL and JOHN PARKER FORD, of Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented or discovered anew Composition orPaint; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the contents of the accompanying vials.
The nature of our invention or discovery consists in mixing together litharge, red lead, borax, and sugar of lead, and uniting the mixture wlth coal-tar madehot to facilitate the union and more perfect mixture of the whole and while hot we-lay it on in the ordinary manner of painting, then cover with sand shaken from a sieve, by which roofs or other structures of timber are rendered fire-proof on the side covered with the paint or composition.
What we claim as our invention or discovery is Not the use of coal-tar as a paint for roofs, but the addition of litharge, red lead, borax, and sugar of lead to coal -tar, thereby giving body and drying qualities to the composition and making a durable covering to a roof or other wood-work to which it may be applied.
