Be it known that I, GEORGIANA FERGUSON, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new Improvement in Window-Cleaners5 and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawingsconstitute part of this specification, and represent, in

My invention relates to an improvement in devices for cleaning windows, the object being to provide for the purpose of washing and polishing windows, a simple, light, convenient and effective device, particularly designed to be used in cleaning the outside of windows which are too high or exposed to be cleaned with safety, by sitting or standing on the window-sill or ledge.

WVith these ends in View, my invention consists in a window-cleaner having certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be particularly recited in the claims.

As herein shown, the head of the device consists of two correspondingrectangular oblong wooden blocks, A and A each having a transverse semi-circular groove, to, to receive one end of a handle B, which may be of any desired length. The said blocks have interposed between them a rectangular fender, 0, located in the plane of their faces or sides, preferably consisting of a sheet of tin, and enough larger in its dimensions than the blocks, to project uniformly beyond the edges thereof. The said fender is secured in place by means of nails or screws a which also secure the blocks together, the inner edge of the fender being inserted into a longitudinal slit, 1), formed in the handle.

As herein shown,the frames are pivotally applied by running their inner sides through transverse perforations b 1), formed in the handle, on opposite sides of the inner edge of the fender, as Well shown by Fig. 5 of the drawings. The inner side of each frame is provided with two collars, d 01,

located against the handle at opposite points, to prevent the frames from lateral movement. WVhen in their closed positions the two frames are held together by means of a hook D, attached midway the length of the outer side of one of them, and adapted to be engaged with the other frame at a corresponding point therein, through aclearance opening, a formed in the outer edge of the fender. One face of the head is preferably provided with several layers E, of felt, or equivalent material, to form a backing for the polishing sheet, whatever that may consist of. I

In equipping my improved device for use, I place a sponge F, on one (the plain) face of the head, with its ends projecting beyond the ends thereof, while upon the opposite face of the head, I place one or more polishing sheets, G, of paper, cloth, chamois-skin, or equivalent material, large enough to extend beyond the edges of the said side of the head. Ithen close the two holding-frames together, and couple them by means of thehook D, whereby the sponge and polishing material are drawn over the edges of the respective sides of the head, and firmly held in place. The device is now ready for use, and will befound most convenient and effective in cleaning windows, and particularly the outsides of windows which are not Within easy reach.

I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact arrangement and .combination of parts herein shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention. Thus, I do not limit myself to constructing the head and fender exactly as shown, the

only requirement being that the opposite faces or sides of the head be virtually isolated by the fender. which projects beyond the edges of the head.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

1. In a Window-cleaner, the combination, with a handle, and a head, of a fender located between the opposite faces of the head, in the plane thereof, and projecting beyond its edges; and two pivotal holding frames, located on opposite sides of the said fender, respectively, and intermediate in size between the head and fender, to which they conform in general shape, substantially as set forth.

2. In a window-cleaner, the combination with a handle, of a head composed of two corresponding blocks, grooved to receive the said handle, a fender interposed between the said blocks, and projecting beyond the edges thereof, and two wire holding-frames, respectively located on opposite sides of the fender,

and intermediate in size between the same and the blocks, substantially as set forth.

3. In a window-cleaner, the combination with a handle, of a head composed of two corresponding rectangular blocks, grooved to receive one end of the said handle, a fender interposed between the said blocks, extending into a slit in the said handle, and projecting beyond the edges of the blocks; two pivotal wire holding-frames, respectively located on opposite sides of the fender, and intermediate in size between the same and the blocks, and means for coupling the two frames together, when in their closed positions, substantially as set forth.
