BEDSTEAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 490,201, dated January 17, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTHA HOFACKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in bedsteads and the object of the invention is to provide a novel bedstead which can be adjusted in width as set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bed widened. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bed narrowed.

In the drawings the letter A indicates the feet or posts of the bedstead. The head board when the bed is widened consists of the sections B B and the foot board of the sections 0 OT. \Vhen the bed is narrowed the sections B C are removed as seen in Fig. 2. The side pieces D are shown as supporting the slats which are adjusted lengthwise so as to be fitted to the bed as its width varies. The sections B G are supported on legs E. The braces F are provided with joints or adjusting pieces G which are shown swung out in Fig. 1 and engaging hooks or rests H where they are held by screws or fastenings I. The bed is thus made firm.

When the bed is to be narrowed the fastenings I are loosened and the sections B C and legs E are slipped out or removed and the adjusting pieces G of the braces folded inward so as to shorten the braces as seen in Fig. 2. The sections B C being brought together and the shortened braces G secured by the fastenings the narrowed bed will be made firm. The sections B B O O are properly tongued and grooved so as to be readily set into proper relative position while being free to separate when required. The slats are each composed of sections K connected by tubes or connections L which allow the slat sections to slide or adjust themselves toward and from one another as the bed is narrowed or widened.

Bars B may be seen red beneath the boards 0 and B, said bars being firmly attached to the posts A A and to the several boards.

When the bedstead is to be narrowed, the bars E Fig. l, are removed and shorter bars R are substituted therefor as indicated in Fig. 2.

The board sections B B, C C may each have a hook like hook H to engage a brace F.

lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a bedstead, the combination with the side rails connected by lengthwise adjustable slats, of the divided head and foot boards, the sections B B detachably inserted between the sections of the headboard, the sections 0' O detachably inserted between the sections of the foot board, and the braces F reinovably engaged with the said detachable sections, whereby the bedstead may be narrowed or widened, substantially as described.

2. In a bedstead, the combination with the side rails D connected by lengthwise adj ustable slats, of the sectional head and foot boards, the removable and replaceable sections B tongued and grooved together and to the edges of the sections of the head board, the sections 0' tongued and grooved together and to the edges of the sections of the foot board, and the braces F detachably engaged with the said removable and replaceable sections, substantially as and for the purpose described.

8. In a bedstead, the combination with the side rails D connected by lengthwise adjustable slats, of the sectional head and foot boards, the sections B tongued and grooved together and to the edges of vthe sections of the head board, the sections 0 tongued and grooved together and to the edges of the sections of the foot board, and the braces F provided at their ends with jointed sections G which are detachably secured to the bed posts, substantially as described.

4.
